Color Question ???

Well I'm working on my Kate kit by Marissa May and I'm determined to finish this doll. I switched for GHSP to air dry paints because my oven was burning kits >:(

This is the first time I'm mixing my own colors for my reborn and I trying to make a painting system that I can use for my dolls. I can't seem to get the blush tone right for the head. Its just the head the limbs look perfect though lol

System (In-testing)

First layer and second layer: flesh #08 (done twice)

Third layer: blue undertone ( around temples and bridge of nose)

Fourth layer: purple wash ( thinned down to almost not visible)

Fifth layer: flesh #08 w/ a smigen of red and

a couple of smidgens of yellow

Fourth layer: blush tone

Then I move on to more blushing (hands, feet, nails etc) and creases

Like I said this method works with limb, but not head :(

I wasn't crazy about making a yellow skin tone but when you add the blush it looks awesome. It kind of makes everything pop, Its almost like using the primary colors. Maybe I should tone the blush with more white, I tried thinning paint down more but I do t think its taking to the yellow very well. Im not sure is there any techniques that you use to for the just the head so you don't use to much red??? Id post a pic but i just stripped the head to start again. Any ideas ladies?

Secrist has a dvd on mixing Genesis HSP's that you could get, so at least you would have some referenceto go by. They also have a technique sheet which shows the color-mix and how much/what it should look like. You might start there. :)

If the limbs are different from the face it could be a few reasons:
They were different colors to start with, even just slightly,
They are not made from the same material/formula,
Sometimes if you made your paint batch too small for all you are painting, even if you use the same colors, just a smidge of any color in the mix could throw it off.
Also, if any of the parts that are baked, if they are the slightest bit warm when you paint them after baking, the paint will stick like crazy and may turn different than painting on a cool piece.

Did you paint all the parts with the same "batch" of paints? Its like trying to match yarn dye lots!
Also... what temp did you set your oven at, and for how long? Are you Celcius or Ferenheight where you are? Do you have a temperature thermometerin the oven you were using? I'm just trying to figure out why your kits were burning. If you post some pics in the "artist showcase" perhaps we can find a solution.

I've been using the same brand paints  so far. I use Hunny Buns Art & Magic Water borne paints that are air dry paints. They are not baked in an over, I switched because I burnt two kits my first reborn kit honey by Donna Rupert and my Kendall reborn kit by Stephanie Sullivan. I wasn't even suppose to bake the Kendall kit I read an article about sealers and how genesis sealer was better than most sealers and I went to bake my baby and it fell in the oven. I've learned the first time after my honey kit that my kits need to be bake at a lower temperature (around 150 F) or I need to turn my limbs to make sure they don't get burned in one spot every few minutes if I bake I 265 F (My oven is old). no

So far I haven't had many problems with air dry paints if only i could get the flesh tone and blushing on the head to look the way I want it to. It could be the paint being to thinned or not thinned enough or like you said the head could be made out of different material than the limbs, I'm gonna figure this out one way or another.  confuse

Since you are using Stephanie's air dry paints, my best suggestion would be to contact her at HunnyBuns and ask her about the color mixing. She is very good about getting back to you and is a very pleasant woman to deal with, I know she can help you on this one. She actually was the one that developed the heat set color chart for Secrist.
