I hate my sea sponge! too stiff and I found that a Scotch brand kitchen spnge in natural fibers has an oval pattern already on it. I tried it and it looks good for mottling if you do it lightly.

Am I supposed to wet the sea sponge or something first? I found it too rough and I got scared of it, LOL!hmm

I also cut a round circle out of a regular old kitchen spong...the kind that comes in colors, and it works great , too for small capillaries and rashy, veining.blankstare

Yes, I usually wet them and then squeeze out all the extra moisture with a papertowel. I roll them and squish them as much as I can. You don't want to have any excess moisture in the sponge when you are painting.

I do like the "natural" sea sponges. I don't care for the synthetic ones as they don't act the same.
Don't be afraid of the sea sponges hun. They won't bite hahaha
I have several sizes of "holes" and it depends on what part I'm doing and what size the doll is I'm working on. I even have 1 or 2 with little squiggly peices on it that are great for the capilaries.

But some use the kitchen sponges very successfully so no worries!

I have pounced it on and then also brushed it all over and THEN pounced it for texture all over and I prefer the all over and then pounce, but that's me. You really need to thin your Flesh08 down bigtime and if you don't put it on thin it will chalk up. I have the Genesis Flesh08 but the other paints are Authentic Reborn which you don't need to thin, but you do need to pounce them thin on a palette first and apply them thinly...HTHsmile

I do one area at a time, I put my paint on my sponge and pounce at the same time I'm applying the paint. I have been known upon occassion to dab some paint on with the brush and then pounce.
Glad you all are finding good information. It' really helps.

Ash, I forgot to answer your question about all over or just in spots...
For the base coat, you do an all over layer, making sure it has a tiny dot pattern. Then after the basecoat, you do the rest. Also, you can do your colorcorrecting with the base coat.
