Shiny spots and too pink
Permalink

This is my second doll and I've been taking it very slowly - adding very translucent layers of color.  However, my doll is still too pink.  I have not done the internal wash because the first doll I did looked lovely in sunlight (warm light) but in cool light - like the new compact fluorescents (sp?) he looked like a dead baby with a ghastly blue "glow."  Anyway, I was trying to avoid this step, but I can't get the skin color to come out right.  The face is just too red and doesn't have that wonderful creaminess to the undertone.

My other problem is that on the tips of the fingers and toes, the vinyl is very "shiny."  It is almost as if there is an oily resist, but I did wash it before I began working.  I washed it again in dawn detergent yesterday in case I missed anything.

I am holding off working on the doll until I hear from you.  Thanks in advance!

By the way, I am using the premixed peach set from secrist along with the strawberry set.  I have thinned down some of the colors even more with mineral spirits.

Hello and welcome to our family forum!

I didn't see that you mentioned which doll you are working on. Is it a Secrist doll kit or from someone else? Only the Secrist kits are designed to use the internal wash with them as the kits are translucent.

If your doll is too pink, use our "search" feature at the top of the page to find MANY threads on "color correction" to get the right color for your baby's base tone or to tone down or neutralize any color you don't want. Hopefully you have a color wheel and also are using one of Secrist's DVD's on painting your reborn kit. They do help a lot for newbies such as yourself. They also explain the techniques and show how to do things. I really like them.

We also have a section in the painting topic regarding the use of the different types of paints Secrist offers. They are all at the top of the topic thread and are "stickies" so they remain at the top.

I hope this helps you. You may also post pics of your baby in our artist showcase, or links to your pics elsewhere in forum. :)

Oh yes, for the shiny spots, you may wish to apply a shine remover if they stay shiny. Do not add any thinner to the shine remover as it defeats the purpose. :)

Thanks Pat I did a search on shine remover as I have never had to use it before. but I have been given a BB Teagan Tiny Premie and I was asked if I could do one for Sams cousins wife who had lost one 11yrs ago the pregnancy was terminated at 28wks and the Dr said at the age if it was going to live it would anyway down to the shine, it seemed to have gone shiney on almost every where chech heat temp every time with thermometor, 130degrees only did it between 8/10mins. I am going to use the shine remover sparingly and pounce it on. but first I have eyebrows to do. after shine remover I think I will use Matte Sealer. XXXXX JUne Wish me luck. been doing two kits at the same time the othe is fine, it's Naomi by Naomi Johnson, don't know who makes the kit but she is no 36/150.

You're welcome June. You know me... always glad to help!
Sorry to hear about anyone having to terminate a pregnancy but each is individual. So nice of you to make a memorial baby for her. I'm sure she will appreciate it and you do good work so it will be nice.

Glad you found the topic you were looking for, we have sooooo many in forum. I have had some issue with the BB vinyl and what you said is what I had to do. I hate having to seal the vinyl afterwards but we do what we do to preserve the art. Let me know how it turns out for you.

Number 36/150! Awesome!
