GHSP sets before I can correct mistakes
Permalink

I've just started my second doll, Rieke by Linde Scherer. I am painting the veins first, using Genesis. I washed all the parts twice in hot, soapy water. I made a mistake, but when I tried to correct it, nothing happend. I used a cotton swap with oderless thinner right after I made the mistake. The cotton swap barely got any paint on it. I then started experimenting.
I had finished the veins on the arms a couple hours earlier, but hadn't baked them yet. I tried removing the veins with plenty of oderless thinner. The cotton swap stayed white and no paint at all came off. This is okay, I know I can use acetone to get the paint off.

But why do I have to bake before the next layer? I thought we baked between layers, to avoid ruining the previous layer.
Also, I don't understand, that after baking you should use a wet cotton swap to see if the paint comes off, when I can't even get it off with oderless thinner. Then how do I know if the paint has set?
I hope you understand what I am saying, I am so bad at explaining myself hmm

Hello and welcome to our family forum ;)

Yes, I do understand what you're getting at :)

With the blues especially, the heat set paints are so pigmented that the blues seem to go right into the vinyl. They are not permanent until baked to set them but they also do not seem to come off with thinner within about 1 minute of putting them down. Just something about that color. Red is another color like that but not quite as touchy as the blues.

If you do not bake them, they are not fully cured and can come off, fade, make other colors change if you apply paints over them. They are not stable until baked at 265F for 8 minutes (internal perwinkle wash... 25F for 10 minutes).

I know it seems silly but you wouldn't want your paint coming off at a later date or making a new color if you put another on top of that would you? This information is all according to Genesis.
I think it also (IMHO) depends on the vinyl or vinyl/silicone mix kit you are working on. Acetone would probably take more of the blue off than the thinner but it will also remove your other layers if you should have any on the doll. Sometimes the blues get so embeded into the vinyl that even acetone doesn't work.

But Genesis says that if you bake your paints at the proper temp and for the proper time, they ARE permanent. This doesn't guarantee it if you use a convection oven on convection for a shorter time, a different temp. It also isn't guaranteed if you use a heat gun for large areas.
Buf Genesis does say that it IS permanent if baked correctly. I hope this helped.

Thank you very much :) I will bake after every layer, I really don't wanna risk ruining anything :) It was different paiting my first doll, it was like the vinyl didn't absorb as much paint and not so fast. But the vinyl on my new doll feels much more realistic, just have to learn to work with it.
Thank you for your answer :)

You're very welcome. Yes, it's all about learning and practicing. Different vinyls act differently (ie: Secrist regular translucent acts different than BB's pink softer vinyl, etc). I have been reborning over 6 years and there are still things that I am learning.

When you have a baby done, please post it in the artist showcase as we would love to see your work. You can also post pics there if you are having a particular issue because then we can see what the problem looks like. For other issues you can always post links in any other threads. :)
