I was wondering if you could use the media used for sand blasting for weighting limbs? Is it the same as the glass beads?? Has anyone tried it and if so how did they make out with it?
Hi Tina, that is what they use over here in Oz. I think you can get a 20kg bag for about $59. They vary is size so look at the site or at the place you are buying them from to see the size. Also plastic bag manufacturers sell the poly beads( or places that make plastic milk bottles. I think the come in 25 kg bags, that how I buy mine, save you a lot rather than buying Ikg at a time. XXXXX June.
I saw some Sage suggested on Ebay I was thinking of trying the 20 or 40 grit not too small but was afraid if it was too sharp on the vinyl limbs. $20 for 25 lbs thats including shipping I need a bit more weight and the poly pellets just aren't cutting it. I use alot of it and they are a bit expensive and I still am not achieving the weight I want.
I did find some from the same seller that says glass beads uses for weighting life like dolls. They are rounded with no edges for a few dollars more. I think I'm going to give them a try. 27.00 for 25 lbs thats shipping included isn't a bad deal I don't think.
I checked with a couple of companies here in the US that carry glass bead blasting beads. They said that the beads have a kind of powder mixed in with them so that probably wouldnt be good for the dolls or the people who buy them. They also said that their beads are sharp, not rounded like the ones you can get at Michael's craft store.
Well you might be able to check with some of the dolly webs to see what kind they carry and if you can do a bulk order for less. Couldn't hurt to ask hun :)
I have never seen glass beads at Michaels, although I have really looked.
Re sand blasting glass: I looked at it at Harbor Freight (in the US) as someone else suggested. It is very fine, and I thought perhaps too fine, but perhaps I am wrong. About the powder or whatever they mix with it, couldn't you fill the sock with the glass and then wash the powder out of it by rinsing it really good under the water faucet? That should get the powder out and since it would already be in the stuffing sock, the glass would stay inside. Would that work?
I ask because the sand blasting glass is SO easy to get for a reasonable price in a large quantity.
I would buy some to have a look at it and as you said was it if it has the powder in it, the other things they use to sand blast is baking soda, so this could be the powder that is mixed in it. There is a place in Brisbane Qld Australia. Will check them as I know that they have a few places in different states over here, but not sure if they are over seas. Will check it out .XXXXX June.
You could do that if you want Poppy. Another thing about the bead blasting stuff is that the beads aren't actually beads as much as tiny sharp shards of glass. That is part of how they take layers of paint and rust off metals. But you could ask them if they can send you a sample before you go ahead and buy it.
As far as rinsing it in the stocking... the powder is probably as large as the glass but it might work, one never knows :o
mine i got from grainger didn't have any powder in it , they also have different size beads to choose from . i 've been useing these for a while now and love em. i use pantyhose and VINYL gloves to contain the beads in the body................sage
