Very weird question I've never seen asked before.

Ok, so I have this tiny Claire doll, right, that's my AA baby. I had this crazy thought after my dog died.

Is it possible to use Zelda's (dog) hair for Claire's hair? I have some from before she died. I mean if I cleaned it and all. Would I be able to root it?

I'm not saying I'm GOING to, but it was a thought. I wouldn't SELL Claire or anything, since dog hair is high allergen, but I though with Claire being an AA baby and needing black hair and having some of Zelda's available, is it POSSIBLE?? And if it is, how exactly does one clean loose hair? Just like you would if it was attached? Shampoo and rinse the whole lot of it?

I hope that whole thing made sense. I'm not sure exactly how to ask that. LOL

confuse    well i know there are people who knit and weave their dogs hair into differant stuff.so i guess you could do it .as to washing couldn't you just put some in a bowl with shampoo and rinse gently.if you're going to keep claire and it makes you happy why not.                       sage   aww

That would be really cool if you can do it, you would have a part of Zelda.

Hair is hair dear. I don't see why not, and you would root it the same as any other hair.
As far as washing it loose... Yep, you can put it in a bowl, put it in a nylon knee hi stocking, etc. Then wash but swish it not a lot, let it sit for about 10 minutes in the soapy water. As far as conditioning, I would just put a bit in the bowl with water and swish. Then rinse really well until the water runs clear.

As far as combing it like the mohair into straight bunches, what I did at first is to get 2 medium to large dog brushes with the metal bristles.
Lay a small batch of hair on one brush, holding the bristle end up.
Take the other brush, bristle ends down and holding it in the opposite direction.
Then just brush across the hairs in opposite directions until you have all your hair laying straight on both brushes, then gather and lay on paper or put in a bag.

I do hope this is making sense to someone other than me! I'm really not daft, although my husband might beg to differ with you hahaha.

So, one brush in the left hand, bristles up, one in the right hand bristles down, the hair in the middle between them, then just like tug-o-war each brush pulling in its own direction. Good? OK! :)

Oh ya, then just let it dry naturally :)

I think it would be a great idea to do that in memory. Using some of her hair. I have no words to tell you how sorry I know it's a tuff time.

Oh my... this brings back a memory of a column I read in Lifelike Dolls Magazine.  It was a hilariously funny article.  (Sheri M. would know.  Is she forum member?)  The way I remember it, this lady had discovered reborning and was anxious to get started on her first doll.  She could hardly wait for her rooting supplies--mohair and needles--to arrive.

Well... the needles arrived but the mohair was still MIA.  Can't remember how she got the inspiration to trim her dog and use the hair on the doll.  If I find the article again, I'll have to let you know.

To make a long story short, the dog adopted the doll, and would lay with it and protect it.

You have got to read this hilarious story before you root with dog hair.

I have a picture of my cat (now deceased) laying with one of my personal reborns, guarding her on the couch. He must have thought it was "his" baby.

Well, I attempted to use the hair, but wasn't able to. It was really coarse and fragile, and I couldn't get it to root at all.

But I did use some other mohair, and it's coming along nicely. I'll post pics later!

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you hun. Maybe you can still use it... how about sculpting something and gluing the hair on it? Sculptors (and AD) have done that. My WH Emily from AD had the hair glued on the head.
Just an idea hun :)

Even though I've used Sculpey for years, I'm no sculptor, by any stretch of the imagination. It's ok that I was unable to use it.

We had Zelda cremated and her cremains are in this really nice wooden box, and my son wanted to keep the hair in there. He says he even thinks he knows where it came from on her body based on it's feel. (I couldn't tell you, it was a wadded up bunch of hair I found lying around....lol)

She was truly his dog, and I have no problems with him wanting to keep it with her ashes.

Plus, you should see the hair I've been putting on her. It's really nice! (in artist showcase, of course!)

Aww Kim that is so sweet of your son. He sounds like he has such a big heart. I'm glad things worked out for you though, I'll have to check out the artist showcase. I'm getting ready to start rooting myself (as soon as the darn hair gets here LOL) I dread it...I try so hard to get that darn swirl down and although I'm getting closer...I have along way to go!

I saw your baby in the showcase. She's coming along.

I have Two Socks' baby collar and other stuff with his cremains too. All his paperwork and the nice card the vet sent me. :) As long as your son is ok with the hair being in the box and it was mostly his dog, then that's cool.

Tina, I know how that goes, Stephanie makes it look so simple in the dvd. :o
And... I'm still tryin to get the hang of the no barb needles :(

I try not to get too discouraged and keep practicing but sometimes it get the best of me. To people it seems to come so natural for them and I wonder if maybe I'm too old to really get it. It's funny though, every baby is a learning experience and an improvement from the last in some way or another so maybe my rooting dream is still out there LOL
I see Helen J. babies and just drool! She just makes them look so real but her rooting is to die for!

It's coming...I'll have to wait and see how it looks completed. I'm pretty sure I didn't did the swirl right, but I'll just have to keep trying!

Glitch!!!

Ok, no Tina, you're not too old cause I'm not and I'm sure I'm a lot older than you. :o
I'm still trying to get the hang of the no barbs. But when starting out, in order to get your hair placement right, you have to go slow.
