I have no ideas on how to style my reborns hair
Permalink

Help,help,help..my babies should look a lot more attractive if I had the slightiest idea on how to style an infants hair...you all knew men do not know how to comb or brush their own real babies and childrens hair..I am in the same boat as them...

A infant's hair is often flat(4-8 weeks old)is it not?

Parting for male and female..which sides..how about bangs,fu-fu's,parting in center...curling..etc

LOL you sound in a panic, mommy's do all kinds of things with babies hair heck even seen bow in babies with next to no hair. I don't do bangs or part in the center on newborns only larger dolls. I sometimes do a curl(i guess you call it a fu fu LOL) on the top, parts and the sides if baby has alot of hair it doesn't matter what side. Some babies have a bit of curl in thier hair when they are born some have wavy hair but yes I guess most are pretty straight.

4 of my babies have sparse amount of hair(girls)=what side is the part and fu fu or curl?
the boy has a lot of hair=what side is the part and fu fu or curl?

I sometime part both sides and swoop or curl the top. There really is no right or wrong way just whatever you think looks good for that baby.

The thing that determines which side of the head the hair is parted on (whether human or reborn) is the hair swirl in the back of the head. As a general rule, if the swirl is on the left, then you part the hair on the left brushing or combing to the right. And if on the right, then part on right and comb toward the left. It's been that way forever as far as I know. Take a notice of right handed and left handed people and kids. See what side of the head their part is on. Usually whatever side the part is on indicates the dominant hand used will be on the opposite side. (Just some interesting body trivia). I know that a LOT of reborners that root hair put it in the back middle, but it actually in real life is to one side or the other, give or take a little.

As far as styles, I would say to google baby hair or infants, something like that. When the page opens just go to the top and click on images. There are literally millions! Just see if there's something you like and see how it looks on your babies.

The swoop or curl (I call it the DQ curl) on top of the head in the middle is from back about the 1950's here in the USA. You pull each side up (about where the part would be on both sides, also front to back, then curl over your finger or a dowel and then voila! You got the curl. Hairstyles on reborns is mainly subjective, it's pretty much whatever you like or looks good on your reborn, like Tina W said. :)

With the exception of identical twins or higher order multiples, there is truly no rule here.  The doll's hair needs at least one hair whorl (swirl).  The way you part the hair depends on the direction of the whorl.  It will "lay" a certain way and that will determine where the "part" is.  A lot of times baby's hair is too short and sparse to make a real definitive part.

I only learned about this like 3 years ago when my granddaughter was born.  All my talks with my hair stylist didn't help as much as seeing an actual baby.  Katy Rose has 5 (yes, FIVE) hair whorls all within a short distance of each other and all swirling a different direction.  The poor girl will never be able to wear short hair unless she opts for a style that calls for a 1/2" x 2" section on top that sticks straight up. Now she has long hair, but it is difficult to part it straight.  Also she will never have a style where bangs need to hang straight as one of her whorls is right at the hairline in the front.

My advice is to look at as many photos of real babies as possible to get a better feel for placement of hair whorl, etc.  I think you will find lots and lots of variations.

If you ever make identical twins, be sure you put the hair whorl in the same spot on both babies.  It is one of the characteristics of identical twins.  If you put the hair whorl on opposite sides, it would mean the babies are mirror image.  That doesn't work unless you have two identical sculpts and one is a mirror image of the other.  Of course, you can put the hair whorls wherever you want if the twins are fraternal.

Hope this helps.

Linda

The swirl is very difficult for me to make...but what I do when micro-rooting almost resembles a swirl..on all my 6 reborns I've used nothing but very light colour hair...and my eyes are not that keen...next hair I buy will have to be light brown...maybe I get the swirl going if I can actually see me making it on the head...with this blonde I just can't see the swirl coming out...

I agree, it's easier to see what I'm doing when its not lt blonde hair. I did do a very nice swirl on my blond boy I'm working on. Shocked the heck out of me when I finally got it perfect! WOOHOO!

Thanks Tina, I'm going to wait till the whole head is done before I show anyone. Ya know, funny thing, I got it down perfect on the blonde boy, didn't root any hair for a month, then couldn't do it on the others. Weird huh? Oh well, back to the drawing board! :o

It'll come back to you =) Once you've got it down your golden. I'm stil working on the perfect technique myself getting closer but not to my standards yet. I try something a little different each time hoping it's going to be the one! I mean I can get a swirl but I'm greedy and want the perfect one LOL

I think it just take alot of trial and error to get it just right. There are so many different ways and tutorials doing one and they are all different. So I guess you just find what work for you.

I've experimented with the swirl, too  Perfection continues to elude me,  I think I am more satisfied when I stop trying to achieve the perfect whorl.
