HELP!! My mop brush is losing hairs like a balding man on a windy day! I could make eyelashes out of the hairs it's lost already. And it has a funny smell to it. What did I do wrong?? Did I not clean it right or something??
Liselle, I am sorry to be laughing my head off at the image of you trying to paint with a little bald head.
My mop brushes sometimes lose hairs also, but nothing like you are describing. I personally use the Loew Cornell mop brushes with my heat set paints. When they need to be cleaned, I use dish washing detergent like Palmolive or Dawn and water. I don't clean each time I use them unless I need to change colors or something. I'm not sure what my brushes smell like, but it must not be too bad of an odor or I would notice.
What brand or where did you buy your mop brush?

I think acetone will probably kill just about anything that is dipped into it, including your paint brush.
It's nearly impossible to find a brush that never loses its hairs over time. A brush that is losing hairs rapidly, however, is one that I would personally throw away.

You can always ask them if they will exchange the brush. Remember, they are closed on Fridays.

I did email them today and ask what I should do about the brush. It's not very usable right now, every time I go to pounce, it leaves hair in the paint. Not good. I'll let you know what they say.
Good that you asked them. They are pretty good about stuff. Here are some suggestions to remember when using brushes: 1. When you get them, be sure to shake, tap, or brush on a towel to remove random bristles from manufacturing. 2. Never use acetone or any chemical like that on them. It can destroy them in a hurry or hide in the ferrule (metal part) of the brush. Use brush soap, saddle soap, or even dish washing soap on them if you feel you must clean them. 3. Never leave them soaking in any liquid, not for more than 1/2 hour and definately not over night. Remember... these are "artist brushes" not house painting brushes (lol) 4. If using heat-set paints, there is no need to clean them since the paint doesn't dry. I try to use 1 brush for each color range of paints (ie: light skintones, dark skintones, blush/crease, etc). 5. Don't leave your brushes up-ended with paint or liquid on them. Meaning: don't stick them in a container with the bristles up. I know lots of people do with seaminly no harm to them but... the paints will have an easier time of migrating down deep if you set them like this. I usually lay mine down in a container. I purchased a celery container with a lid and they fit just fine in there. Also, it has a lid to keep dust and lint off of them and keep them cleaner.
Well, I got a reply back from Pat Secrist and I must say, I'm very impressed with the customer service. I was told to mail the brush back to them, and they explained how the brushes were made and that it's normal for some hairs to fall out.
I did wash it with detergent, and the odor appears to be gone, but Pat said that there shouldn't have been an odor in the first place.
He will send me a replacement brush and a 2010 catalog. I'm very happy!!
I'm so glad you have a good resolution from Secrist on your brush. You'll love the catalog, too!
