hi everyone I am new to reborning dolls!I have put together dolls from doll kits in the past they were already painted and looked nothing like these beautifull babies! I have been doing alot of research on the reborning process and now i am a little confused! I see that there are paints you have to heat set and then there are air dry paints.Which ones are the best to acheive the most lifelike apperence? I have also been looking at the stater kits and which one is the best to sart with that will teach you the entire process of reborning a doll? sorry this is so long ,but I dont want to jump into this without the right advice!! thank you ,Elaina
I have to say, as a newbie myself, this is one great group of people!
Personally, I think the secrist kits like Zoe and the newborn kit are the best starters. Zoe was really easy to do! (She's my avatar) She comes with the heat set paints.
I did purchase some air dry paints, but haven't used them yet, as I am having a bit of trouble getting paint off a couple of practice heads I bought.
My understanding is that the air dry may tend to fade after a few years, and that the heat set doesnt.
Either way, as I've been told, this is a rather expensive hobby, but it sure is a lot of fun!!
Air dry and heat sets paints can both be used to achieve lifelike appearances. It's just a matter of preference for the artist. I've seen some amazing air dry painted babes and heat set ones. As far as teaching, secrist has a great beginners dvd that will teach you just that. It shows the reborning process of a Taffy kit from beginning to end. I bought both the beginners and advanced when I first started and it was a big help. I'd say start from there =)
yeah another newbie, great fun.dvds are great cause seeing it done makes things more clear. the secrist reborn special technique s dvd is fabulous, covers alot of differant things- not just aa's . hope to see your baby soon. sage
I think it best to start with one of the numbered starter kits. Preemie size is good for starters but probably not a 6" kit as they are very small. Some like the 17" babies with closed eyes.
It looks like a lot of money to start out with but you will be able to do quite a few dolls from what you get (just have to buy more kits, the paints will be enough).
Take a look online at www.secristdolls.com under the kits and starter sets and just see what appeals to you hun. Be sure to get a dvd. I know some do the air dry paints and yes, as Tina said, they work well for some but the Genesis are sooooo forgiving (like for do-overs) :)

I have fallen in love with these beautiful living dolls and wait to finish the one I am working on. My question this early morning is this.. I would love to make the bodies myself and I so have several body patterns for my porcilaine babys how ever I am wondering if there is a patteren for the reborns and if so how do I find it? there are patterens for the body,it a great way to cut costs. the book ...creative doll makeovers by jan tucker as some in it, but i'm sure there are some online. probably someone on the forum will know where sage
Thanks I am going to try to find a nice body pattern. It is not about cutting cost I just really do enjoy making my bodys for my poracline's. Can't wait to finish my first little premie and so far it is going really well.
I've found body patterns on eBay, as well as a several other websites. The problem is that they all cost money.
What I am thinking of doing is taking a purchased doll body apart and making a pattern from the pieces.

Hi Kathy, and welcome to our forum. I purchased some time ago, 3 sizes of body patterns (in 1 pattern package) from Simplicity, McCalls, or another clothing pattern catalog available in most places that carry people patterns. I just looked in the crafts/dolls section. These are quite similar to the bodyslips out there.
Hmmm, That's pretty cool! 29 years of porcelains! Both June and I have been makeing them for over 20 years. I always made my own porcelain bodies. It was actually fun since you got to put your own special touches on them. My last one was the full size Shay. Not only did I make her body, but I also built her armature. :)
Hi to everyone. I am from Russia and I don't know much about reborning. I like dolls and I have some very beautifull porcelain dolls. I often go to e-bay and this month I found reborn babies there. I've never done reborning before. But at last I decided to try and I bought one small 6" starting kit by Secrist, and then one kit of 4 girls - 15" babies, and 3 kits of Secrist - Baily, Charlie and Happy (+ needles for rooting and 3 wigs for the three ones). Also I bought some paints from the Secrist web-site. And now I am waiting for my children. We have Russian site about reborning, but I did't find there anything about Secrist babies. So I decided to be here. Let me know, please, where can I read about Baily, Charlie and Happy reborning. Thank you.
Hello and welcome to our family of forumers. We are glad to have you. Ours is actually an international forum because we have reborners in a large range of ages, skills (including newbies like yourself), and from many many countries!
The best way to start with reborning (or what we call newborning here at Secrist) is to purchase a dvd. This will give you a lot of information on the techniques you will need to go out and reborn all the dolls you want. It's best to start with the basics and go from there. You will find that some companies have their own kits, paints, and other supplies but some are the same as others. We are here to help you, not to teach you how, so I suggest the dvd: The art of Newborning or Painting with Genesis paints.
Here are some links for you so you can choose which you think is the best for you:
We have many dvds and also painting charts that show everything from mixing your own paint colors, to placement and techniques of eyebrows, veins, and capilary veins. http://www.secristdolls.com/learn___sell
So check out the website ( www.secristdolls.com ) and check out the search feature on top of our forum page if you want to search for infomation. Also please check out the rules of the forum for posts and pics.
Thanks again for coming to us, you're going to love it here, and again, welcome! :)
Thanks I will go to Hobby lobby and Check the patterns out The have them on sale about once a month or so for .99. I usually stock up then you can only buy 10 at a time but I do try to get at least the 10 when they are on sale. Have a great weekend....
You will love reborning. I think you will get the most information from DVD #3 as it covers all the information presented in DVD #1 and DVD #2 along with new content that wasn't seen in the previous two DVDs.
Again, welcome!
Linda

You will find that is does have the most information and also the most details in it. And when you are ready, the next one that is great is the advanced reborning dvd. Then on to the special techniques encyclopedia. Woohoo!
