pippilong, i'm still struggleing with this too but i do know that a use of differnt skin tones, veining and and a berry maker helps a lot. mottleing realy adds to the realism. hopefuly the artists on this forum will get use both on the right track. sage
Some of them use a texturing/thick medium as the very last step to painting their babies. this medium is usually put on with a sea sponge or some other uneven sponge or tool.
The thick medium is available on the Secrist doll site.
Others just have a way of painting so that their wowrk has a depth of it's own.
Thank you !!!..I think the thick medium. I have bought everything from an Italian sellers ( bebaby). They sells Secrist items. I request information on availability of this. (sorry for english!)
pippilong, i forgot to mention that when i apply my matte varnish i pounce it on with a cosmetic sponge this tends to add some texure to the look of the baby. sage
the effect is different...it is not opaque or mat , this is "shiny"....it seems so many small drops of water... there is a doll in ebay with this texture..
Everyone develops a way of doing things to accomplish the desired effect. You just need to experiment to find a method that works best for you.
Here's a method that works fairly well for me.
After the initial flesh foundation layer, the subsequent skin layers are applied very thinly and randomly. I use berry-makers, cosmetic sponges, and pieces from a synthetic sea sponge to accomplish this. I might apply one color layer with a sea sponge, rotating it as I go. The next layer may be applied with another sea sponge or one of the other items such as a berry-maker.

If things are not listed/shown on the Secrist website, that means they are out of that item for now. Just check back in a few days or weeks. They decided a long time ago to work it so that if they were out of something, it wouldn't be offered on the site until it came back in stock. That way you wouldn't have to be surprised if it wasn't in your order. Instead of getting an out of stock/backorder you'd just have to order it the next time. Does save a lot of headaches I think :)
