Hi, I heard somewhere that you can seal your reborns limbs and head on the outside. Help!!!Is this something that really needs to be done, I would really like to know how it is done and what you to do it. Thanks
I have never sealed my dolls on the outside when using heat set paints like Genesis and Secrist's Authentic Reborn paint as it is not necessary to protect the painted finish.
You can use the Secrist glazing products if you need some shine on the eyelids, mouth, etc. If you have too much shine on areas that should not be glossy, you can use Authentic Reborn Shine Remover. These are not the same as a sealing product, but they are helpful if you need a wetter look or your doll appears to be too shiny.
If you have more questions, please let us know.

Hi Linda, thank you for your advise. No, I have not sealed any of my dolls either. It was just that I heard someone or read somewhere about it, thanks for your reply Glenda
Lots of people used to use the matte sealer to "seal" the paint on their dolls but I keep telling them that with Genesis there is no need to do this. I have it right from their factory that Genesis paints need no sealant or protectant as their paints are self-sealing. I know also that some people have shiny spots for various reasons (over-heating the vinyl, rubbing, continually putting on/removing the clothing, etc) and they use it for that too.
Like Linda said, if you need to do away with shiny spots Secrist has the super shine remover now. Works pretty well and you would only put it on the shiny spots, not the entire baby.

Hi, I've been reading these threads and I see that the Genesis paints don't require a sealer. What about Authentic Reborn Gentle Touch paints? Do they require a sealer?
I have the Authentic Reborn Gentle Touch Clear Coat Matte Sealer. Why would AR make a sealer if it wasn't needed for their paints?
Also, can I use the AR Gentle Touch Clear Coat Matte Sealer on the scalp of my doll and still root the mohair afterward? On the Secrist site, it says the sealer bakes to a hard coating....too hard to root through it?
I own and have watched several of the Secrist DVD's but these questions aren't answered on them.
Thank you!

Since all "heat-set paints" are made by Genesis for other companies (like Secrist, etc), so no matter what they call them (ARGT, ARP, etc), they should not need any sealer according to Genesis. I would presume that they make the sealer because people have asked for it, not knowing or maybe not believing that the paints are already sealed (when baked at the proper temp for the proper time).
I don't see why you wouldn't be able to seal the head and then root your hair. I believe the "bakes to a hard coating" doesn't mean it will be crispy or hard like nail polish, but more like a "durable" coating. Use any sealer very very thinly so when it's baked you don't get the chalkies, which can happen if you use too much.
i believe and i could be wrong the sealer was for use on the kits that became oily, there was a problem awhile back with a bad batch of kits which became oily .......SECRIST REPLACED THESE KITS FREE OF CHARGE......but people had made/bought lovely babies from these kits which they were not willing to part with soooo .......secrist made this sealer available to those that wanted to keep there babies. they were able to wash the babies in a degreaser soap then apply the sealer inside and out to seal in the oiliness............sage

You are very welcome. :D By the way Tren... could you please register for the forum so you are a member? Your name would then have an underline under it on the left and you would be able to see how many posts you have made. Thanks hun :D
I used the genesis matte heat set varnish on several of my dolls. The dolls had some shiny spots and the varnish is suppose to lessen them as well as seal the doll. I put it on real thin all over the doll like your suppose to. It didn't made a difference at all. As a matter of fact it seemed to make the shiny parts worse! I don't use it, like Pat said you don't need it. I did figure out the shiny problelm was because my oven heated a little high so I just adjusted it and now I don't have the shine problem.
Thank you for posting your experience with the sealer. it's nifc to hear from others. Yes, you have to be very careful with the heat as you found out, as it does tend to cause shiny spots. And always make sure that you do not add any thinner to it as it will defeat the purpose.
