Hello everyone! I tried to post earlier but for some reason it didn't post. I've always wanted to collect dolls but never really found dolls that were real enough looking to me. Wow have things changed. I do have a few questions. I bought my niece a baby doll when she was little, I believe it was a chou chou and it's skin was sooo soft. I bought the Secrist kit #2 course as a place to start. It doesn't tell me which doll it is so if anyone knows please let me know. I did expect the vinyl to be softed to the touch than it is. Are there dolls with a more lifelike skin feeling? The more I have read the more I believe the kit is" really the basics". Many companies sell their own kits with Secrist dolls. Does anyone have an opinion on who offers the best complete kit or if I'm better off buying everything seperate? Sorry for so many questions. I used to take pottery classes a few yrs. ago but had to have an organ transplant and travel to class was too much to deal with since I'm in constant pain.. I love that I can do this @ home and relax. Thanks ahead of time. Barb

IMHO I believe the complete kits are a great deal for beginners. They usually have if not all most of the basic necessities to get you started. There are also kits out there that have soft "Skin like" feelings to them. They are more expensive though and I believe in thier description they will say "real skin" or something like that. This is a whole new ball of wax for me. I'm really excited to begin but, alittle worried. I'm figuring I'll go with the genisis paints since they seem a bit more forgiving. Any advice is truly a great help. I'm a perfectionist and I'm trying to do as much research as possible. There is a women about 30 min. from my house who offers classes. I'm really debating on taking atleast 1. She is, I believe, a Secrist rep. But, the kit is burning a hole in my hot little hands! LOL!! The transplant has been a very tough recovery! It is a very rare surgery. It will be 2 yrs. in Jan. But, sadly I'm still in chronic pain and the meds. that go along with this issue. They gave me a 60/40 percent chance of getting rid of my pain but, no such luck.

I guess I really didn't have much of a choice since my pancreas was dying for no reason. Sorry to ramble on. Thank you for your kindness and concern. biggrin

BTW, Your baby is absolutely beautiful! How long have you been new/reborning if you don't mind my asking? Oh, and your smilies are Too funny! It's great when you can put a smile on someones face isn't it!?!

Hello, welcome to the forum. I have been a member for a couple of years now and love it. I too have had my share of troubles, not me in perticular, but my husband. There are patches you can get for pain, you maybe able to speak to your Dr. As for reborning, it is contagious. The kit you got from Secrists usually has a name on the back of the head. I agree, GHSP are great. also if you can take a lesson with Genesis Products, but keep in mind you have your own style. I found that the DVD for reborning and the one for rooting was a big help. Dear Sara, Thanks sooo much for the wonderful welcome and advice!!! Sorry to hear about your Hubby! Is he doing better? I don't know how long he's been ill but it sounds like a while. I think it's just as hard on our families as it is for us. I thought once my transplant was over I was in the clear. But now they have found a mass on my thyroid. I was put in the hosp. in May with something unclear. My blood work was all over the place. They found it via ultrasound. And they said I needed to repeat the test in 3 mo. Then they put it off to Jan. so I'm in limbo waiting to see if it's what he thinks. They said it could be a chronic leukemia or lymphoma. But they say they don't really do much if it is that. They say they just keep an eye on it. WIERD! It seems like it's never ending. If it's not one thing it's another.

If you don't mind my asking how many babies have you done? I never know if I should say reborn or newborn. I know the difference but it seems alot of people use the terms interchangeably. Your baby is so sweet looking! I love the coloring you used on her. She looks truly real! Amazing!

Barb, welcome to our forum! We're glad you're here. I think you are going to love this hobby, and it's especially great because you can do it at home.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with health problems. I am currently sick with whatever I caught from my kids and granddaughter. It's nothing like what you deal with.

Yet, it's so hard to be awake and thinking today! I guess it's just a bad cold, but is somehow affecting my entire face and the headache is so annoying. Even my teeth hurt. LOL.

I'm so glad some of the others were here to greet you. As you have already seen, we have been blessed with some wonderful people in the forum who are happy to share their knowledge. :)

I think you are definitely on the right track to learn your new hobby. Secrist has great products--especially, for beginners. After you go through the Course #2 DVD, I would suggest continuing to the Course # 3 DVD and / or taking a class.

Many of the common newborning questions have responses here in our forum so performing a search prior to submitting a question is sometimes the fastest way to find an answer.

I think most of the vinyls you will find will end up feeling very similar once the doll is completed. The exception might be the really hard vinyls. After a doll is stuffed and weighted, the skin will feel like, well... vinyl. There are companies that advertise "real skin" but I think the paint used is the key. Babies have smooth skin. The heat set paints will not change the smooth feel of the vinyl unless the artist uses the texture product to create some sort of 3-D type effect.

When you finish your baby, I hope you will share a photo. (The only area that in which we are allowed to post photos is the Artist's Showcase, and we all love looking at new babies!

Hi Barb, Ask for a needle byopsy on your thyroid, Sam had one and it turned out pre cancerous, it was removed in May and it came back non cancerous. But at least we dont have to worry about that anymore. He Had Spinal syrgery in Aug, fell over dog chain and broke both wrists in June, and on his Birthday 3/1/07 he fell off the tipper and broke both hips and pelvises and spent 6 mths flat on his back in bed, thats when all our troubles started. He has also just had a Cyst removed which they did think was a Tumor, from his top jaw and it has been growing there for 15 yrs. He has healed well and we are now hoping that there is no more appointments for awhile. He will have to have a hip replacement one day. Know bak to you, when you start reborning , it will in itself help you to feel better as concentrating on something special has that effect on your mind. Your createive side will shine and you will be so busy thinging of what to do next , you wont have time to worry. Best of luck, happy reborning and a Very Merry Xmas. XXXXX JUne

Dear Plays with Dolls, Thanks sooo much for the warm welcome! I'm so blessed to have found this forum. The people here are a wonderful group. I was worried about joining a forum do to previous ones I've joined. I don't know if it's a competitive nature, them worried about too many doll new/reborners or if they are just plain mean. Thank goodness I haven't run into any of that here! Thanks for the DVD advice. I think you are right maybe I'll do both ( buy dvd #3 & take a lesson). The reckless part of me wants to just dive in the deep-end and see if I can swim but, the mom in me says,"take your time". LOL!!! Sorry to hear you are ill. There are a ton of viruses etc. running around right now. I hope you all feel better soon! I caught a bug myself & have spent all of tonight @ the Hospital to make sure it's not too bad. Being as they removed my spleen during my transplant it's Very hard for me to fight off those little buggers. They can literally kill me! That would have been nice to know before surgery.LOL. But, my Dr didn't tell me alot of what I'm having to deal with now. Thanks again. And please feel free to write & let me/ us know what you are working on. biggrin

Barb, I'm so sorry you had to go to the hospital. ou sound like one resilient lady to go through such serious medical problems.

I went to the Dr.'s office today and they gave me a prescription for and antibiotic. Hopefully, it will work fast so I'll be able to keep up with my 2-year-old granddaughter tomorrow. Thank goodness, my daughter was able to work from home today.

I know what you mean by some seemingly mean and/or overly competitive members in some of the doll groups. I've quit a few of them for that same reason, as well as, a shortage of time to spend reading all the messages. It's a mystery to me that so many people seem to be able to work, make dolls, and participate in groups while I need to have more hours added to my day to do all those activities.

About the DVDs... the Course 3 DVD includes the same skills that were introduced in the previous two of the series, and it goes on to introduce even more techniques. As long as you have the reborning supplies (paint brushes, paints, etc.), I think you could dive right in. The good thing about the heat set paints is that you can apply them, and wait until you are absolutely satisfied prior to baking" it bake each layer of paint.

Dear Linda, I'm sorry to hear your family has been under the weather! I hope it's over quickly. I hate ging to the Er but my pain was unbearable and still is. I always feel like I'm on ann assembly line .LOL!!! I think he spent all of 15 min. with me and 5 of that was sticking an I.V. in my neck! Creepy! furious

! But, I agree there are not enough hrs. in a day. biggrin

I think I'll do what we discussed and pick up the next dvd and the one specific to hair rooting. Thanks for your help!

Dear June, Sorry for some reason my last post didn't turn up. I hope your hubby is doing better. I know it had to be so hard on your family. My son broke his back @9yrs. ols when we were @ a friends house. He slid on the damp grass and landed flan on his back. But, unfortunatelly there was a tiny hump of dirt right where his spine landed. Keeping him in his brace 24/7 while all his friends were out playing & swimming was aweful. I hope you all get a break from the hospital. I know sometimes I feel like I should just take up residence.LOL!!! BK 2 the dolls I just figured out mine is a Zoe. She is so lovely in the face! Now that I'm laid up again I believe it was ment to be...it gives me time to watch my dvd's. aww

See, things happen for a reason. That's what I keep tell myself anyway. It keeps me from losing in and crumbling into a sobbing ball tears. cry

I'm blessed in that I have a very helpful husband and two teen boys! I couldn't imagine going through this with out them! They are so helpful. Even to the point of helping me chose dolls to try next!!!(even hthough I haven't started the 1st) LOL!!! Take care!!!

Your welcome and Thank you, I have been reborning a little over a year now. I sorry to hear your still having the pain. I hope you and your Doctor can find some way to control it better. Reborning is a relaxing hobby however addicting. You'll just love it.
