Has anyone tried to do an external wash instead of internal? A really well known reborn artist told me that she only does external if one is needed. She said you have much better control over the paint etc. It makes since to me to maybe try it. Has anyone tried it?

External washes are used to change the coloring of the vinyl. Like if the vinyl is more orange, grayish etc. For example people will do a mint wash before they start painting. Some do that as a first step. And internal wash is when you use the periwinkle color on a translucent kit like the Secrist kits on the inside. Where you can get the underlying blue tones under the skin tones. They are two very different things. Some people instead of doing an Internal blue wash on vinyl that is not really very translucent, theywill paint the blue hues on the outside. Hope that helps. Hugs, Brenda
I only do external washes anymore. Internal ones are frequently too subtle, but it depends o the vinyl. You have to do them very very lightly if you do them on the outside though.
I don't do external washes, I just do spots that I know will need the depth of color. And only on the non-Secrist kits. On the Secrist kits, which are made specifically to be done using the tranparent/translucent internal wash, I always do a thin internal wash. Tried it without and it just wasn't as real looking. Matter of fact, it's been a number of years and I still have the bub.
