Can I paint over?

confuse I started my fisrt kit 'Missy' yesterday, using Authentic paints, but they seemed really thick, unlike the dvd, where they are really thin.

I bought Aunthentic purple wash, flesh 07 , flesh 08, titanium white, and Genesis petite paints pyrole red 02 and 05, and Phthalo Blue. My supplier also sent me Superior Shine remover free, as I paid extra postage in error.smile

I had already baked the inside coat of undiluted Authentic purple wash. Woops!
Anyway, I did a few coats of skin tones, baking each layer, I got into a system,
paint, dry, bake the head, paint, dry, bake the limbs...etc.

But when I checked the dvd in the living room, (baking was in the kitchen) the lady demonstrating the techniques used thinner. Well, I only had white spirits, so resorted to using  that.
Not good for fumes no I would strongly advise odourless thinners.

I decided to stop at this point and purchase odourless thinners, from the internet.

But, the doll now has a grubbly looking head, but the limbs are ok?
The back of the head looks better than the front! The back is nicely toned, but the front looks old and shiney, like you would want to wash it, to make it clean. Like a dirty toddler, not a preemie baby!
My daughter came round, she thought it was so funny and we  both ended up falling about laughing, so it was really theraputic!
Back to the head... can I paint over the face and cover up my mistakes? Then rebake?
I'll try and get a photo on the forum so you can see.
Any help gratefully received!

Sometimes you can correct with painting more layers. If it's too bad, you will probably have to strip it and start over. You can remove the baked on paint with a product called Goof Off. You can find it at Lowes, Home Depot maybe Walmart. It smells. And is good to use outside. Use as few strokes to remove as possible. Use in a line not a circle. Sometimes this will cause your dolls vinyl to be shiney. I know it stinks to start over. But, it will be worth it. And you'll get more experience doing it. Best of luck.

Thanks Brenda,
I appreciate your reply :o)
I'll try painting over first. I think I have got mixed up with Authentic and Genesis paints when I bought them as I am new to this. Been reading through the threads, and I should have thinned the GHSP before using. I hadn't realised to do the base coat in lighter paint, then gradually move darker. I think I did it the other way around!

Some people make up a batch of 'skin coloured' paint for their babies, and keep it in a little jar, incase they need to re-use it. I might do this and see what happens, then if it doesn't work, srtip the paint off, and start again.
This is my practise doll, to learn on, so as the saying goes, if at first you don't succeed, try again! I'll keep trying! It certainly is an art form and I'm learning!
Many thanks,
Joanne :o)

After my first attempts of painting, and taking note of Brenda, here's what I did.

I used a thinner to remove some of the paint  gently on the face. The skin tones on the back of the head were really nice, so I didn't touch them. This took away some of the dirty look of the skin.
I guess I applied the internal purple colour wash too thickly, so that added to the darkness of the skin.
I then washed all in hot soapy water to remove traces of thinner.

Then, I applied several layers of the foundation skin tone in authentic paints, and the last layer being a very light blush layer.
This has worked really well! I seem to have built up a more realistic skin colour that is natural and pink.
I realised two things:
1. Start light, then go darker as required.
2. My kit is Lollipop not Missy!!!

I had wondered why I couldn't get the toning right and blushing similar to Missy, as the contours of Lollipops face seem to be of a more younger baby, which I wanted.
Silly me!

Today I'm going to give her more colouring, and hope to finish painting her.
I'll try to remember to take photos this time!

Joanne I think we learn something new with each one we do. At least you hope that's the case. It's a lot of trial and error. That's what makes the reborning process interesting. When you quit learning your not improving. IMHO. I read a lot on different forums. And try different techniques and tools. And hope for better results with every one. But, that doesn't always happen. If at least you learn from your mistakes. And there will always be some. I admire you for sticking with it! Just do the best you can. The first ones you do are the hardest. And some down the road will give you fits too. YOU GO GIRL! BOL

Hugs,
Brenda

Hi Brenda,
I've realised that I had the oven too hot, I tried to re colour lollipop, and things were going ok until the oven overheated! :o(
So I am going to use her to practise my rooting on instead. But, all is not lost! I am going to re use her limbs and body though, and I'm waiting for Missy head to come in the post, along with a Ming kit. :o)

I am so pleased though, because I had a go at making Zoe yesterday, and taking into account my downfailings, I'm so pleased with the results! Even my daughter, who is 22, says she's lovely too! I've put some photos in the artist showcase.
Thank you for your encouragement, it's gratefully received!

I need to name her :o)

Just wanted to say that I left my computer right in the middle of my post and then by the time I came (hours later) the problem was solved.  I did want to say that the odorless mineral spirits at Wal-mart works great, but couldn't find goof off there..had to go to the lumber and paint supply place.  Well glad everything is solved..lolsmile

You can get nerve damage, liver and kidney damage, lung problems, brain damage, and all kinds of other stuff from using that Goof Off! I know, I have nerve damage from it. It's actually used as aircraft and automotive parts cleaning solvent. No wonder it'll take the paint off! But it is nasty stuff, whether you vent or not.

I tried the goof off once. Never will use it again. Pat B. right. If there any more doubt the smell alone should tell you something. Smells like lighter fluid! Anything that has a smell like that can't be healthy in any aspect.

To each his own. Any thing can be misused. It's good to use gloves and have ventilation. With any product.  I know people who repair vintage talking dolls. And they have used this stuff for many years with no problems. You have to decide what works the best for you. And what you are comfortable with.

I do agree, and definately use gloves and do it outside if you must use it. Since I have had a run-in with the stuff I don't care to any more. If in doubt on any products just go to the manufacturers website and look for the MSDS sheet and specs on it. They HAVE to post the MSDS facts by law.
