We are introducing the new Authentic Reborn paints in the 2009 tutorial catalog Guide. These paints are a step up from Genesis and designed specifically for reborn artists. For example: Authentic Reborn paints are 50% more transparent than any other reborning paint without using any thinner at all. They are designed to be used right out of the jar with no thinner at all. Authentic Reborn paints flow and spread more easily than regular heat set paints. Authentic Reborn paints come in premixed and regular colors and has all the same colors that Genesis has. You dont have to memorize new paint color names. Because you dont need any thinner Authentic Reborn paints are easier to control thereby preventing over painting that looks like lipstick or clown blush. Even mixing your own colors is easier with Authentic Reborn paints because they also are 50% more transparent than any other reborn paint. They heat set just like Genesis. Here is a comparison for using other kinds of paints versus Authentic Reborn paints: Which paint should you use on your baby? Are oil based paints safe to use for reborning? How many times have you heard of someone being overcome by paint fumes and feeling nauseated or sick? Oil paints have toxic materials in the oil base that are released during the air drying process. Thats why you see a warning on the bottle or box to work in a well ventilated area. Without these high levels of toxic materials in the oil base the oil paints wouldnt dry. It has been said that oil based paints may be one of the most toxic paints on the market for reborn artists today. Air dry paint by comparison lays on the surface of the vinyl and is subject to flaking off or changing color over time. You definitely dont want your baby eventually turning yellow or green. This can happen with air dry paints. The reason that air dry paints change color is that the chemicals in the air dry paint react with the chemicals in the vinyl. You cant stop this process because the paint never stops reacting. Heat set paints on the other hand stop reacting the moment they reach 265° Fahrenheit. Thats because the baking process has turned the heat set paint into flexible plastic bonding permanently with the vinyl. Authentic Reborn paints by comparison are non-toxic, lead and phthalate free. When used according to the directions these heat set paints cure quickly, permanently and safely. And because they are heat set you gain the advantage of a strong mechanical bond to the vinyl. Its almost like the paint soaks into the vinyl and never lets go. Under normal use these heat set paints wont change color or fade*. So if you want a safe way to paint your babies that will look great and last a life time then give Authentic Reborn heat set paints a try. *Please keep your baby out of direct sunlight as the sun can fade just about anything
See the other "sticky" forum topic for tutorial on using these new paints and also the tutorials on the website!!
One more thing I want to add... Please remember this information below for the best use of your paints! :
Since Secrist is carrying several kinds of paints now (ex: Genesis; Authentic Reborn; thinner added; no thinner added; etc) it is of major importance that you order the correct paints and use them each according to their own directions. Please pay attention to this as it is EXTREMELY important as to how your babies come out! (It's like ordering paints from another company and expecting to use them with the Secrist directions.)
If you are using the new no thinner added paints and you add thinner to them you will not get the effects or coverage that you were expecting. If you are using the Genesis that need thinner added and you don't add any, then you may end up with the dreaded "chalkies" on your baby. See what I mean? Always use the directions for the paints you have purchased with those paints.
Thanks Pat, That answered my questions regarding mixing the two different paints (thinner vs. non thinner). I guess I have to wait until my old paints are gone then before I try these out. I'm excited about giving them a go though.
Ya me too! But I want to try them now but my problem is I don't have any money to buy them. I just sent Danielle Zweers some money to get the Isabeau kits because I'm one of only 2 dealers in the USA for her kits. So I'm flat busted broke. But hopefully I can sell some kits and get some money that way.
That is exactly my problem, the money issue. I want them now too! I was hoping to sell a baby or two on ebay to be able to get a few extra supplies including my new paints, however I'm finding ebay is not the best place to sell these babies. Everyone wants something for next to nothing! I refuse to sell them too cheap. Thats the problem with ebay now. I see dolls up for sale starting at prices of 49.99 and up and not going for much more than that for a final price. Maybe 100 for at end auction. I thought of maybe a website might be a bit better, but I just don't know. I guess I need to research this a bit more.
There is BnB or a fairly new site called horsengoggle. Otherwise there is Etsy. Other than that or having your own webstore I'm not sure either.
I know what you are talking about though... I'm not about to lower the price of my quality babies down to nothing either. I know, everyone wants one for a nickle (kinda like a garage sale) :( But a lot of them are ones that wouldn't buy it even if it was cheap! KNIM? (IMHO) I'm going to try some of the juried art fairs in my neck of the woods this summer. Something where you have to have "quality" before they'll let you in. So we'll see how that goes. I guess I don't mind paying a jury fee if it gets me into a big name show.
Hey! Thanks! There's gotta be some outlet for these little sweeties! Also I think (IMHO) that the people that want them for a cheap price don't know exactly how much time we put into them. I know that I still put in over 60 hours into each and every bub I do. I think they see the words in the ebay auctions but they're not really READING what it means. It's like listening... some people "hear" what you say but they're not really "listening"!!! KNIM?
At least I know at the "juried art shows" that most of those people coming there are there for "art"! they may not buy but at least they presumably are there because it IS art. So I'll keep you posted :)
I SAW YOUR POSTING ON FORUM. I BOUGHT A REBORN FROM EBAY RECENTLY FOR OVER 300 AND THAT WAS CHEAP! I KNOW HOW MUCH WORK YOU HAVE IN THESE DOLLS BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO LEARN TO MAKE THEM. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR DOLLS!
Hello Dianne and welcome to our forum. Yes, you are right! $300 can be very inexpensive for a reborn these days. I know artists who have gotten over $3000 for their babies. But those are the ones who also have a following and are the top reborners.
My avatar (Phoebe) is one of mine. She was hand signed just for me by Danielle Zweers herself, so she is my personal baby. But I could always make someone another one if they wanted a Phoebe. If you would like to see some of my work (and even though I've been reborning for over 6 years I still get better and better) you can just click on the link below. I am a dealer, reborner, and reborning teacher. You can take a look around an let me know what you think. I have 3 of my babies on etsy right now too and have lowered their prices.
I have a bit of a time keeping up/finishing my Timeless Treasure Babies site but I'm hoping to be in full swing once I'm finished with college mid May. :)

I am using the authentic reborn paints with my genesis over them for extra depth & they work good & just don't mix them with the thinner. Really should not put the genesis wash over them before baking. I like the peach & strawberry for lips & nails, blush & creases. Just add extra to doll I think.
Genesis wash? Do you mean the internal perwinkle wash? You can mix them because they are all the heat set (Genesis) paints but use thinner with the ones that need it and no thinner with the newer ones. Read all directions on each particular type of paint before using.
i tried the new vintage blossom paints they're lovely, but the blush tends fade. by that i'm you 've got it just right and bake the baby, when it comes out the blush is way lighter. i'm still gonna buy the set cause the colors are nice. a kinda coral. sage
Hmmm, thats kinda weird about the blush paint fading. Usually the paints get darker on heat curing. Well then maybe give the blush a little extra layer?
Sage, what new "vintage blossom paints"? I don't think I've ever heard of them.

i have been trying these new paints for about a month. i really like them alot. i made a beautiful baby last week and now i was about half way with another when WHAMMY!!! my baby turned greyish brown. it looked like i had given my baby a mud bath! i dont know what combinations of colors did it, but something obviously didnt agree with each other. are we not supposed to mix colors with these paints? all the jars say it is ok to mix with other heat set paints, so i thought it was ok! i like to make my own custom colors and i cant figure out what happened! any ideas? thanks victoryah
Welcome to the forum. I'm so sorry your baby turned greyish brown. Per Secrist's AR FAQ, custom colors can be made by mixing the Authentic Reborn paints with other Authentic Reborn paint colors, as well as, Genesis paints. If you mix with other Authentic Reborn paints, the transparency should remain about the same. Keep in mind the more Genesis you mix, the less transparent the paint will be because Genesis paint colors are super pigmented and more intense until mixed with thinner.
Did you mix the AR paint with Genesis or another brand?

Duh... No wonder I didn't know about the vintage blossom paint colors. I didn't receive any samples. I'll have to get my hands on some of these.

ty for such a quick reply. i used to hang here all the time, but i had to have surgery on my hands and have rh, so reborning is hard on me at times. i am back to reborning now and loving it. i still have no idea why the paint changed colors! i havent mixed genesis with the premixed ar paints. i have kept those separate. i will give a few days and try again! they are great paints! thanks for the welcome victoryah
I just finished painting 2 babies using both Authentic Reborn and Genesis paints. When I custom color I mix ONLY AR with AR and Genesis with Genesis. I bake in between the layers not using AR and Genesis in the same layer. I love being able to do this as I like the versatility of Genesis but the preciseness and convenience of AR. The colors are also great for any skintone. I am posting them in the artist showcase if you'd like to see. The third baby is almost finished, I'll post her too.
I confess I have mixed Genesis (mixed with Genesis paint thinner) with AR paints. I've never had a problem with it. I love being able to mix custom colors.
Maybe the problem occurs if the paint is not mixed well?

I am brand new at doing this, having painted one mini and just working on the premie (Zoe). I have had a terrible time with getting the baby MUCH too red. I use only the colors in the kit. And even though I am drying them with a heatset gun for the time Pat shows on the dvd (same gun), the paint still comes off pretty easily with just a little rubbing. With my last layer of paint this morning (at 1:00 am!), my doll suddenly turned a muddy grey brown as well! In frustration, I scrubbed her down with soap and Joy dishwashing detergent and tried again - but now she is that weird muddy grey so I am going to have to use a flesh color to tone that back before I do any blush. I've never used Genesis paints and I don't care for their consistency compared to the kit colors. But the Strawberry is too blue - and especially now that the baby is this weird brown. I think something is wrong with this particular batch of vinyl. I'm very disappointed. I will learn from the experience though.
I'm sorry you are having issues. As far as the paints coming off, that is a definate indication that the paint is not fully cured. Since you are doing a preemie, maybe you can put it in the oven at 265F for the 8 minutes. This is a no-fail thing as long as you are sure that the temp is correct (use and oven thermometer).
As far as the muddy... can you please send me an e-mail right away with all the steps, colors you used, method of curing, exactly which of the paints you used (colors, AR, regular Genesis, etc... all the details) and explain at what point the colors went muddy? Send it to buffington@secristdolls.com. I will personally send it to Mr Secrist asking him (or letting him know) what is going on and what he thinks is the issue. I have known of only 1 other person that had the muddy issue. We must find out if it's the vinyl or the paints. My money is on the paints.
As far as color correction, hopefully you have a color wheel. Go to the color that matches the closest of your now painted muddy kit. Then go straight across to get the neutralizing color, mix only the tip of a toothpick of that color into your flesh paint. Then paint as usual.
Also, people don't usually read the how to's on heat set paints. You always thoroughly mix the paints in the pots first before using them. Hopefully you have done this before you use them each time. :o
Someone just sent me some Authentic Reborn paints, but I don't know if they're "thinner added" or not. How can I tell? And where can I get directions on how to use them properly...ie...oven temp' etc. Thanks so much. Annette :)
If you look at the very first post here in this topic, it tells about the Authentic Reborn Paints. They have thinner added. Please refer to the top of this topic. I believe they used to have a tutorial on using them either in the tutorial magazine or on the website. :)
And our second "sticky" in this topic thread is "How to use..." so check that one out too!

I haven't read all the posts in this but boy it seem's along time for people to be posting. I like a few of you have an excuse because of ill health in the family, pat my dear overseas friend, how are you these days? Just because i haven't been on here for a long time is purely time. Three new grand children one Xmas day 2012, 5 weeks premie due to Samantha going into renal failure, his name is Asher Samuel Harvey, 21st Mar 2013. Zane having his 1st to partner Nicole also 5 weeks premie, his fourth daughter Samara Ann Marrs, and then Tamara had Phoebe Ellen Harvey on the 28th May 2013. She had to have major surgery less than 12 hrs after she was born. As her Trachea didn't join her stomach. If she had been fed even a small amount of milk, we would have lost her, she would have drowned as she had a small tube going to her lungs, so it would have gone to her lungs via the small tube. She was rushed to B'bane, capital city of Queensland. Aus, and had a 7.5 major surgery to reconnect the Trachea to the stomach. She was in NICU for four weeks then transferred back to Nambour where Tamara had her for a few days before being allowed home. She and the others are doing well. Previous to them being born, Zane had bought a Harley and finished work on the 3/12/12 and was going to have coffee with Nicole, he saw two cars stopped at lights and the one he was following had no chance of stopping so he tried to avoid it by going arround to the left, the vechicle swung out and clipped his right leg, fracturing it in 6 places, it was three days before they could get the right surgeon to repair it, having two screws top and bottom and a titanium rod from his knee to ankle. Then 28/813 he was away working in the mines and some bloke came up behind him when he had gone across the road for dinner at the pub and king hit him in the back of the head, smashing his head on the counter and then punching him in the left temple spitting both above the right eye and the left temple. He then was on the concrete and he was still kicking him all over and banging his head on the concrete floor. I got a phone call from the mines town hospital saying he was in a bad way, they transferred him to Townsville where they though he was going to need brain surgery to release the pressure. After cat scans and MRI's they found he had a fractured knee cap on his bad leg. He is off work and his boss hasn't come forward with his last two weeks pay. I haven't been able to see him yet but keep in contact as regular as i can. I hope everyone else has had an uneventful year and that things are running smoothly. Pat i just realised i posted in the wrong place could you please put it in miscellaneous. Thank you as i dont know how to cut and paste.......... STILL. LOL. XXXX. June

Pat Buffington, I'm on my computer now and have tried to put this in Miscellaneous but not so sure how to do it, I have ended up with it posted in here twice, can I leave it to the experts. Will post pics of these new babies in Artist show case. XXXX June.
I think it has been so long for me,, being on the forum there are a lot of new faces and a Lot of new annonomus people checking out the site.. I hope you all learn something new and your career into the art of reborning has begun......
