Rooting Questions

I have rooted my baby and I'm not sure I like what I'm seeing.  I checked my needle last night and it seems to have only one barb (?) on it so it goes very slow but there aren't large "plugs" showing.  I'm thinking that maybe it is the hair itself.  How do I know what a quality mohair is?  I bought this separate from the doll because I wanted a brown hair and not the blonde that came with the kit.  It is very soft mohair.  I can't seem to get it thicker in spots either.  She looks a little uneven.  I did buy some needles that are 40G and have 4 or 5 barbs on them.  They are the uncut ones and I did use them and more hair is set when I do but I don't like the plug look.

Can I keep rooting or at some point will it hurt the dolls head?

I don't have a clear picture to post, but the one I do have I will put in the artists showcase for opinions.  Thanks much!

With the needles that have less barbs you will get less hairs inserted and shouldn't see "plugs" which is what you want. No one likes pluggy hair.

It also depends on what brand of doll and what it's made of as to how the hair goes in and stays in the head. Berenguers are notorious for having uneven spots in the head so it doesn't root well in some areas.

If you are using a needle with more barbs and you don't want all that hair in the head you can use a tweezer to pull out the ones you want. Remember, if you are only inserting one hair, you will see 2 in the hole because you are going in the middle or at least the end of the hairshaft so it gets doubled in the hole.

Did the mohair come in a long rope? If it did, then its roving hair and will not work. Because the hairs are all tangled up, often the hair you root will stay tangled and pull out. If that is what you have, I strongly advise that you buy different mohair from an individual, not a company. Companies such as Secrist sell only roving hair, while individuals that cut and dye the hair themselves will have better quality hair. Good luck!

Secrist does have more than just roving hair. Their ultra premium was marvelous! I'm waiting for them to get more in (although I do have my own angora goat hydes I use hair from).
