(your photo was removed per the rules of the forum. If you wish you can post a link instead. photos are only allowed in the artist showcase.)

Can someone please tell me what is the cause of this crack in the scalp. All my hard work in vain! This is a 20" Jody from Secrist dolls.

thanks
Ronel

I have no idea what would cause that....has the vinyl been in any extreme temps.?  WOW...I'm sorry that happened.  Maybe it's something that was wrong with the vinyl in the first place.  ashamed

I have sent a copy of this forum thread to the office. Someone will answer this as soon as they can.

In the mean time... what were you doing when this happened? How hard do you grip the head when rooting? How many other dolls have you reborned? These are some of the questions that they may ask you.

I have made a couple of dolls already, (some of them are on display in the  artist showcase) but this is the first time this happend. No, I did not press hard on the the head, just holding it in a firm grip not to slip.  And no the head was not exposed to extreme heat or cold!!  disbelief

That's a pretty color mohair you are using.  Is that a chestnut brown?
Maybe there is some kind of vinyl adhesive that can be used on it.  Of course that doesn't help the value any if you are planning on selling the doll..  Darn...that's a lot of nice rooting it looks like.

It is strawberry blonde. It shows more reddish than the actual color. That's 2 days of intense rooting and I must admit it look really nice. Pity is must go to the dust bin. I feel like crying.....

Ronel, I was waiting for a response from the office, here it is:

"Vinyl will never do that on its own and is nearly indestructible once completely cooked. There are chemicals out there that people use when reborning that can attack vinyl or any other plastic. It may be possible that this head came into contact with something. Its impossible to really be sure what happened just from a picture. If she wants to send it back to us we will replace it for free anyway."

They said to send it back and they will credit you for the postage and send you a new head. I will pm you with the details.

If you want to save your hair you can pull it out and hold onto it for the next baby. But do pull it out carefully so it doesn't felt or ruin it. HOpefully it's not glued at all. Also be carefully as they will check over the head at the factory and you don't want to make any additional problems on that head so they can find out what happened. OK? :)

PS... they will only replace the bare vinyl blank, not the hair or the paints you used. This is pretty standard practice in the industry.

Too bad they don't pay you for all the time you put into it. That's a shame.. But I know that's how it goes.

Thanks Pat

What did she say was the reason for the cracks, I would love to know. I also send her the name of the thinner i used. maybe that caused a reaction with the vinyl.

She didn't know yet as they were sending it to be checked out. I asked her to let me know when she finds out something. OH! Good idea of sending her the type of thinner you used. :) We'll have to wait and see.

In any product there can be little random anomilies that can react. Thank you for your input. This issue has been solved and all are happy once again :)
