I have been wanting to get started for some time, is the delux starter kit enough to get me going or should I purchase additional items. I don't want to get half way done only to discover that I don't have everything I need to complete my baby. Thanks for the help.
That is a good kit. Yes, it is enough for you to get started with. The only other thing you should need is a dispenser bottle for the thinner and some stuffing (polyfil). You can choose from 5 different kits and order your dispenser bottle under the kit dropdown menu. The polyfil you can either order on this website or you can pick it up at your local craft shop.
Thank You, can you tell me if the paint in it is only enough for 1 doll, also do I need additional weighting pellets? If all goes well with my first one I really want to get into this. My kids want one for each of my 8 grandkids wearing their "coming home" outfits. Also do I need the heat gun? Can't wait to get started. Just not sure if I should start with the kit or not. Not knowing the size of the paints and other stuff, not sure what the best deal would be.
The petite premixed paints in the kit are enough to do several dolls, not just one. What you will need if you decide to really get into newborning is to purchase 1 each of the flesh 07 & 08 in addition to your kit then. Also (if you are doing only Secrist or Apple Valley doll kits) you should also have more of the internal wash paint. There are enough of the other paints to be able to do over 20-30 dolls as you either only use a tiny amount or you thin it down still only using a small amount.
If you want your babies heavier, then yes, get additional weighting pellets. I would suggest the poly pellets in the body and either those or the glass beads in the limbs and head.
You don't really NEED the heatgun. I only use mine for the 6" triplets; regular doll lips, eyebrows, and wrinkles. Otherwise I just put the doll parts in the oven to cure.
That kit is the most complete and as you can see you only need very few other items. I hope this helps :)
Hello mimi The internal wash is a periwinkle blue paint really thinned down and applied on the inside of all you parts (limbs, head). You really only need it for the tranparent kits to add depth. As far as bruising, I personally haven't had a problem with that , as long as your paint is really thin and well drained from the limbs before baking.
Thank you Tina, everyone seems so helpful here. I will include that color in my order. Can't wait to get started, I am now in the process of knitting an outfit for my first baby.
Yes, Tina is right. You only need the perwinkle blue (internal wash) for the Secrist and Apple Valley dolls as their vinyl is made translucent just like a babies skin. As far as bruising, you won't get that with the Genesis paints. Most of that info is about the acrylic paints and Rit dye that people used to use. It would actually migrate into the doll parts and cause what looked like bruises on the parts. Most do not use those any longer. And be sure you bake your internal wash for 10 minutes not 8 like the rest of the paints. We have found through extensive testing that it is not fully cured at 8 mins.
Thank you for all the help. I finally got everything ordered. I am so excitted to get my very first doll done. I have been busy knitting a blanket for her, I will get it off the needles today so when she is finished I will be able to keep her warm. Thanks again for all the advise.
My kit came today. I got Tina in it and her eyes are in, can I bake her with her eyes in or do I need to remove them? I had requested Gumdrop with no eyes thinking that would be eaiser to start with but Tina came in the kit. I will be happy with the one I got just checking to see if I need to remove the eyes. I got the extra videos and paint so I am going to watch the dvds several times before I start.
OOO I'm so excited for you! Yes, Secrist Real Eyes can be baked in the head. No problem. Although you will want to be particularly careful so not to get anything on them like paint or thinner. That could ruin the eyes when baked or just become permanent.
If you ordered Gumdrop and got Tina I would let them know. Someone wasn't watching or something got confused on the initial order. If you would like to remove her/his eyes you can do so from the back of the eye socket inside the head using an exacto knife.
Good idea on watching the dvds several times, that way you will learn something new each time you watch it :)
I hope I don't have to bother you too many more timems,, I have her almost done, I love doing it and I think she is turning out quit good. My question is, I got very light blond mohair in the kit, what color should I paint her eyebrows? The eyrbrow paint that came in the kit will be to dark for a blond baby. Again, thanks for the help.
Would you post some pics when you are done with your baby? I'm going to order my first kit in a couple of weeks, I have decided I'm going to buy the starter kit deluxe , extra internal wash paint, and some extra pellets, this thread was really helpfull, thank you :)
yes, if I can figure out how to post a pic I will. I am currently rooting the hair. I sure hope she turns out well because I have enjoyed every step of making her. As I said the mohair they sent is a very light blond, I think the dark would have been better for my first. I have ordered darker for my next doll.
Mimi, I think you can mix some flest tone with the eyebrow colour to lighten it, there is a colour wheel you can get to match colours, that might be helpfull. XXXX June
Flower Girl, If you are unsure as to how to root May I suggest you purchase a DVD on rooting, or if you look way back in rooting teckneiques, Precious Lullybyes has done a step by step rooting, with pics. I don't know if it is still there. Once you get the hang of it, you can always ebay your dvd. XXXX June.
