If you bake your sculpt you will not be able to root it without drilling tiny holes in the head. Danielle Zweers says to cut out the scalp part of your sculpt and bake the rest. Then when it's cool, put the scalp part back in and root it that way. Then you don't ruin any work you have done on the rest of the sculpt.

Hi ..
I am planning to root my sculpt before baking. DO I only go through the clay with the needle or do I also go through the form? Once I root. shaould I then bake and then paint or should I root/paint/bake. Also do these forms need to be color washed?
I have just stated my first sculpt tonight.
Thanks for reading..
Sharon...

You would only go through the clay, but after inserting each hair (or set of hairs) you will have to use something thin to push the clay over each root so it won't come out. But don't push too hard or you'll have lumps.

I would think you would want your head where you are going to root to be already painted because you can't paint over the hair after it's rooted. Then you would bake and then color the rest of the head.

No, since it is not translucent you would not colorwash your sculpting form. We only do the internal purple wash on our babies that are translucent.
