I have been trying to paint an ethnic toddler.  I can get the mottled look for a little baby but how do I get that nice smooth paint look for my ethnic baby? She just looks all splotchy and she's too old for a mottled look. I've tried sponges, dobbers and makeup sponges and I'm about to give up!  thanks, janet

Don't give up Janet! Just get this DVD:

Michelle has a kind of different technique and it looks really good!

You would just do everything except for the mottling as they have more of a full color instead of the blotches on the forehead and limbs. But the technique is the same

Well, the DVD I bought really didn't help me any. The doll that Michelle is painting the ethnic

paint starts out as a dark colored complexion baby to begin with. I am trying to do ethnic

paint on a light skined baby and tried her technique on my doll and it didn't work. My doll

still looks blotchy and the color is uneven. I rubbed the paint in just like she suggested

without going over the same spots.

Doe anyone else have any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Maybe I should try

dyeing the vinyl. Does anyone know how to do that? Thanks so much, janet

For some people it just takes more practice. And if you did the paintbrush technique for a toddler it would naturally give you an uneven splotchy tone. I would not do that part on a toddler (except for the cheeks) and even though she used a medium toned translucent, the techniques would still be the same.
You could go to the AV site (www.avdw.com) and look in the gallery. There is Tina from Tina's tots and she does the toddler dolls. Maybe she has some suggestions for you. You'll have to contact her via her website. It's on there.

I didn't do the paintbrush technique, I did it just like they were doing it on the video, with a sponge. Thanks for the extra info!

You're welcome. Let us know how the info from Tina works out for you. We'd love to see your toddler in the artist showcase. Maybe do a before (with the splotchy uneven skintone) and a do-over with the nice skintone :)

Well, I put my AA doll away for now, I just got too frustrated with it and it wasn't any fun for me.
The DVD was very helpful to me for painting my Asian toddler doll, she turned out great! I'm addind a pic. of her:)
