HELP!  I am working on my first doll.  I love how the painting turned out, and now I am doing the hair.  I got the delux beginner kit (and am using the mohair that came with it).  It is looking horrible.  I got the advanced rooting dvd too, and am following everything they are telling me to do.  What is happening is a lot of the time, the needle isn't grabbing any hair, and then just leaves a hole.  And other times, it will grab a hair, but only a teensy piece of hair (as if it's broken off) and leaves a black stubby dot (it's black hair).  I think I've ruined my doll because of this.  Sometimes it works and grabs a long piece of hair, but the scalp mostly shows this holes and black dots and I don't think there is any way to salvage it.

My question...is this normal?  Is it a low quality mohair that is causing this to happen?  I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.  After trying to follow everything they said on the dvd and it not working, I tried a host of other ways of doing it too, and no matter what I did, I'm still having those two issues.

I ordered a wig for the baby because I don't know what else to do to save it, but the wig looks silly because it's a newborn baby and should have little whispy hairs.  UGH.  I'm so discouraged.

Sounds like the mohair is inferior. When you push the hair into the head, try twisting the needle as it goes in. That should stop the empty holes. Also, make sure the needle is as flat to the head as you can get it when pushing in the mohair.

This sounds like a keeper baby! Put on a cute hat and be done with the hair.

It took me quite a few babies before I got the rooting down. Use the best quality mohair and a crown rooting needle with three barbs. Also, use a heated rice sock. It took me a while to figure all this out but I get much better results this way.

You can't expect your first rooting job to be perfect. It's a matter of practice, practice, practice! lol The mohair is not inferior, just inexpensive and lower quality.
Remember: you do get what you pay for.

Also, if it's the long bunch of mohair from Secrist, don't cut it apart, take a pinch of hair from the bunch and just pull it out of the bottom of the rest. It shouldn't tangle or matt that way. I had to find out the technique for that stuff. Then with each pinch of hair you remove from the bunch, just set it aside with the rest. You will see that the hair is actually nice and shiny (doesn't look like that in the package). Part of the reason people think it's breaking off is because their needle got ahold of a short peice and rooted it.
I am in the process of doing a tutorial on the stuff. Now this is the black and the blonde beginner stuff. Also, when I used the blonde, I added some other mohair I had to it and it worked just perfect.

As far as no hair in the holes, it can take some time to get "used" to the needles. Since you can see the hairs as little dots, just make sure that you get a hair and go back in that spot with the needle. That should also push the other hair (the broken looking ones) out the bottom of the head.
I agree, to make it easier to root (although Secrist is already soft) use the rice sock method. You'll be amazed at how much easier it will root.
