Creating a beautiful complexion. . .

Hi, All!

Do you have a formula for creating the perfect skin tone?

Right now my favorite skin technique comes from Jeannine Holper's Excellence in Reborn Artistry where she describes and illustrates her 6-step newborn layering technique.  But, I'd like to hear other ideas or tips you might have for creating a beautiful complexion.

Thanks so much!

Hi Nai Nai, we are all trying to perfect this one !!!

my formula as such for skin tones is constantly changing as i am learning but i am going towards the style you are talking about and i am adding and using more of a colour range of GHSP to my layers / work... =)

i too am learning about things u can use for texture and am having fun with this ... =)
sorry i dont have a single answer but i found that the only way to learn is to experiment with your kits and dont be afraid too play around with the colour layers... =)

Also very important i found is to neautralise or colour-correct the vinyl (if it needs it) to start with using your washes to make painting easier and get a more-desired skin colour... actually a while back there was a great post on colour-correcting vinyls in different colours ????

The great thing is you can keep adding layers until it looks right !!!

if i were you and you like the holper style of painting is to follow what she does and then add your own twists to it and then see if you like that depending on each kit of course =)

another thing i do... is i write down each layer i apply when i do a doll and then add twists to it the next time, then u have a record of where you are at and then look at that and think how can u change it and then when u finally cant beat that list stick with it but each doll i do i am still adding layers to that same list LOLOL....

sorry too chatty ehheheheeh ((HUGS)) Rosemarie

Thank you so much, Kaz! You are too cute. I LOVE your chattiness. You made my day! smile.gif

I like your suggestion to write down the layers, since I often can't remember exactly how I painted my previous little one. I'm going to try that. Hm-m-m-m-m. . .I might even get a special little notebook for it!

One thing I like about Jeannine Holper's method is that she likes to add a little bit of yellow to create a newborn skin tone, and that extra step helped to improve my babies' complexion. I wouldn't have thought of adding yellow on my own.

If you have any tips about texture, I would love to hear them, too. I've seen some ideas using the Genesis Thick Medium, but that's about it.

I'm off to experiment!

Rosemarie, I would do as Kaz said and write it all down, but remember you don't want every baby with the same skin tone and to add a liittle of something else to the basic colour you like to get a different complexion. When I did Porcelain Dolls Thats what I would do, or you end up with them all lookimg the same colour.    Forgive any mistakes, I have a monkey swinging on the back of my chair, and moving my mouse, I,ve already posted before I checked and had to fix it up. As per usual, but I won't complainweirdface.June m from Oz
Sick of having to edit my mistakes, when you look the second time and find another you missed before you posted, but then when you have a granddaughter twising your chair all the time ,it isn't hard to press the key next to the one you want.

Your Welcome Hun (((HUGS))) i am just starting to incorporate the yellow too - i know exactly what you mean !!!! i think its heaps of fun... yes write down your layers and experiment by adding twists along the way, your bound to find a great complexion then, you'll know exactly what u did to get that complexion when u have written it down, dont forget to also add any notes alongside the colour for example consistency, whether it was a wash or not etc... also the colours if u mix ur own paints so u dont forget how much of each colour was mixed, if you are anything like me after painting 15 layers i tend to lose track if i dont write it down hehehehe with the texture for skin i have just bought a natural seasponge - which adds texture i cant wait for it to arrive in the post so i can use it ... ~ Kaz ~

I have used a sea sponge on my Zoe that I am working on. At first I was not so sure about what I was doing but as I added the other layers I loved the results and am going to be a little more bold on my next baby as it is giving alot more depth and character to the skin. It's trial and error and playing. I noticed Michelle Barrow Belisle has a reborn diary for keeping the details on each baby it's $14 or something. A cute idea and helpful too, I think I will keep notes and then include a pic of each finished baby and perhaps what they sold for.

Thanks, everyone! All terrific ideas!

June, you are right that you have to change it up a little and add some different shades of color.  It's hard, if you get a skin tone that looks really terrific, not to want to reproduce it over and over. But then, all the babies look the same!

I love the idea of the sea sponge, Kaz and Christie. As soon as I'm done writing back to you, I'm checking the internet to see if I can get one, too.

Here I go!  LOL

Christie, Your doing all the right things, and yes it would be nice to do like a scrapbooking diary on each baby, for future references. Love June M from Oz.

Tassie, I haven,t done any scrapbooking ,but my eldest daughter has, from the day Macey was born she took photos of all the presents and kept the wrapping paper and cards so that she would have something for Macey to remember for the rest of her life, so sweet. There were only black and white photo's for half of my kids and poor ones at that, and we couldn't afford to take to many because of the cost, but boy have I made up for it since. June M from Oz

hello, some started a post a while ago asking for my own "painting method" here is a link to that topic http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=121380&p=3&topicID=19294336

within the above topic there is another link to a "tutorial" of sorts where i've taken photos of one of my babies step by step... however i've not gotten back to that to add in the discriptions of what i was doing, but the photos may help some!!??

To be honest i'm continually playing with each baby i do. And while i follow a method of my own vaguely, each and every baby i do gets played around with and painted slightly differently.

I don't use pre-mix paints but mix my own and i use a vast range using yellows, blues, purples, peaches, browns, and all mannor of slightly differing flesh tones.

Some layers i paint thinkly, and i also use very very thin washes.
sorry there just isn't one answer to this question

Hi, June!  I would LOVE to stay and chat!

You know what I wish sometimes?  I wish I could just sit down with you and the others on this forum and have a cup of tea (or coffee, or soda, or anything) and talk.  Wish you weren't so far away!  It bothers me that I'm never going to get to meet, in person, the people on this forum.

But I guess I have to be grateful for what we have!  The internet has opened up the whole world to us and the chance to be friends with anyone anywhere on this planet.

So, yes, June!  Let's continue to have fun and chat about our passion for creating beautiful babies--and enjoy our friendship, even if it has to be only online.
