Suggestion Box

I thought I would open up a suggestion box for Secrist related topics.

A suggestion I would like to raise from a reborn artist point of view is I know personally, and maybe there are other reborners out there that also would like to see. Is that we know the artists (sculptors) behind the Secrist molds.

I recently brought the Secrist 2008 Magazine, and it was beautifully done. I really liked the layout, the presentation of each individual mold, and the descriptions for the limbs and bodies. But what I did notice was the Sculptors are not mentioned.

When selling a reborn, I think it is important to know as much as possible about the doll. Right back from its very creation when it was sculpted. Also when purchasing kits, I tend to have my favourite doll sculptors that I will always go back to and not hesitate to buy from because I know the kit will be of standard I seek. That the face wont be off centre, nice ears, little details like that.

I also like to add the person behind the sculpt in my listings on ebay.
Eg: Secrist Lollipop, Sculpted by Cheryl Hill.

I have just recently completed a Lollipop myself, and listed him on ebay.  And when I came across this hurdle I had to google the sculpt and find out who the Artist was. So I could share alittle bit of this information with potential buyers.

It would be nice to maybe showcase the sculptors behind these wonderful sculpts either on the secrist site or in the new upcoming magazine.  Just as buyers wont to know much as possible about their reborns, us Reborners like to know as much about the kits we work with.

Kat

These are wonderful ideas. I, too, would love to know all the names of the sculptors.

Thanks, Kat!

Its nice to know Im not alone on that idea. Hopefully some more ppl stumble across this link too, and maybe put in some input. That way Secrist may just notice it, and take the idea(s) into consideration:)
I think the sculptors would also appreciate some recognition too.

Hello, Welcome to the forum, I,m June M from Oz, I think it is a realy good suggestion, as Precious Lullaby's had to do a search arround to get the sculpters names, so she could put it on ebay as well. Maybe in our 2009 Tutorials, they will concider that. How about it Pat B? weirdfaceJune M from Oz.

The 1/4 limbs that were originally made for Missy,Zoe and Lollipop look to large for Louise. I think secrist should consider either releasing smaller limbs for Louise, or sell her with the full limbs with suitable cloth body, or just sell her as all vinyl.

I'm near Gympie, it's about an hour and half past the Sunshine coast, With those sculps you can get 3/4 legs and they look a nice size and then you can dress them in little dresses or long rompers. Where are you from.weirdface June M from Oz

Thank you for the suggestion of listing the sculptors names with each sculpt.
When sculptors are under contract to Secrist, their names are listed with their respective sculpts. However when their contract ends and they leave Secrist, they are no longer under obligation to list the artist. For example: Cheryl Hill left for some time but did come back again as a sculptor for Secrist. During that time (of her absence) her name was not given/listed on her sculpts.

Also, some of the doll kits are cross-overs from our sister company --Apple Valley Doll Works-- and some were sculpted by Mr Secrist himself, therefore, no sculptor name.

I understand your reasoning on this but please understand Secrist's.

Again, thanks so much for this suggestion. If you have any others, please feel free to list them. We do also already have a topic on some suggestions, please feel free to suggest things there too (not in both places with the same suggestion please).

That is an interesting perspective. Believe it or not, listing sculptors names actually can help sell a sculpt! Something for Secrist Co. to think about!

Yes, they do already know that but...
I was told that they do not care to promote that persons identity (if you will) for a doll when they are no longer with the company. I mean, if you made something for a company you worked for, then quit, would you expect them to promote the fact that "you" made this for them? Sorry, most companies don't work that way.
And it doesn't mean that they are doing it because they are mad, just that they don't want to promote you if you are no longer with their company, KNIM?

Pat B,. It wouldn't be much different if you left one company and went to work for another, you wouldn't go addvertizing the first one would you. I can see where Secrists are coming from.June M from Oz

If i created/designed something for a company to produce in their vinyl and for whatever reason left that company at a later date yes i would expect them to keep my name on the creation itself although they are the producer i would still be the creator by not haveing my name on that product it could be automaticaly assumed and usualy is that the company created/designed it, to me that would be wrong IMHO

I agree.  I didn't have the words for it but TEA says it well.  IMO, Secrist Co. is making a mistake on this one.  I, for one, lost a bit of respect for the company when I read this in the Tutorial/Cataloge magazine.

I have searched out the original sculpt artists myself with selling secrist babies... I'm sorry to have to say it but people see the word "secrist" in a listing and automatically the value of the baby falls... its not considered a "serious" sculpt.

The misconception is that secrist sculpts are only for beginners and the collector fan base just arn't that interested... in australia at least, if you have secrist listed in your listing title you'r baby gets a significant less page view hits. Meaning people often wont even bother opening your listing to give your creation half a chance.

I do understand that secrist stop promoting the sculpt artist once the artists contract is up, however it does strike me as odd, couldn't it almost be considered a breach of copyright. By taking the sculptors name off the item, its almost fraudulatly claiming that the item was created by secrist ... i guess their contracts cover all this or they wouldn't be able to do it.

I do find it interesting that when people sell a secrist baby they cite it as a secrist sculpt... but i've never seen anyone sell a Little Dreams Collection, BB, DD or other suclpt baby as anything other than the actual artists name behind the sculpt.

Just putting my thoughts out there on this one.

in the end you can almost always find out the artist behind the sculpt by doing a google search.

i agree with Naomi, tinyearthangels and lovesdolls too, if i sculpted something i would feel an entitlement to be the "sculptor" still, no matter what, after all its your own sculpting work isn't it?
i think credit should be applied where credits due!

Ewww..I think I have opened up a can of worms..lol..

I gotta say though, Naomi's points such as the Secrist sculpts seen as beginners sculpts, and not taking seriously by collectors.

And a really big point, it is true you dont see ppl advertising theirs sculpts as DD, BB DBS etc. Hmm... something to think about I think

Well IMHO, I agree with the ones that say that credit should be give to the one that created the sculpt. I often wondered if Mr. S. did all these babies. I just never noticed it before because every kit that I have bought (there has been a lot) it was just there who did the sculpt. It's kinda like who sewed the US Flag (BR)..or good old BF with the kite string and key or any one that made something even though someone took that something and made profit off of it. I find it rather strange that they are not mentioned...hummm. I see this topic was a couple of months ago. Oh well..it's good that we are in America and have that right to at least speak what we think as long as it's done in a nice way. :o)

Mr S. did not sculpt all these kits, he produces them from artists who sculpt FOR him. Their names are mentioned on the website of who did which ones. Some that do not have any sculptor names are usually transfers from Secrist sister company (Apple Valley Doll Works) and those he did sculpt, so thus, no artist name under them on the Secrist site.

I don't see the Secrist kits as being automatically going for less because they are beginner kits. I know a few that have gone for over $1500 USD! Depends on how they are done and by whom, just like other doll kits.

And yes, credit should be given to the sculptor, not just the production company, but I can't say why sellers list the way they do.

Well if it helps any, I sculpted 3 of the transfer Apple Valley sculpts-- Micah, Isabelle, and Stacy, and these Secrist sculpts: Teddy, Hayden, Acorn, Fern, Sassy, Sparrow, Sunflower, Gumdrop, Taffy, and there is a newborn-- still waiting to see when they are bringing that one out-- and I might have forgotten a sculpt or two--

Hi Vicki!!!!! So glad you could drop in, I missed you!

I was not aware that you sculpted the AV 30", I guess no one ever said. And I didn't mean the Mr S sculpted the newer ones in the AV line. I have been with AV for 20 years and just meant the older sculpts (I guess I should have clarified that previously, sorry).

And yes! it helps alot to know who sculpted all those (my you are a busy sculptor)! I knew about all of the Secrist you mentioned above, (and a new newborn is coming out by you??? How awesome!). I just love your sculpts.
Someone in the artist showcase did your Isabelle as a boy and he looks really good! I told her to send the pic to Secrist and see if they would put him on the AV gallery.

Hey hun, don't you want to officially sign in so we can see some of your babies in an avatar? I know you make those beautiful sweaters for them. You are actually my inspiration for starting sculpting again. When I came to that first newborning class a few years ago you were working on a face and had it done in a few hours and gave me some really great hints. Never got to thank you!

Come back and say a few things now and then ok? ;)

Well glad to have you hun, any time!
Sorry to hear about your health issues, hope all is well now! :)

I hope we can inspire you to sculpt again. I put some of my head sculpts in the artist showcase under sculpts. When you get time maybe you might want to take a look and give me a critique (an honest one, really).

Welcome back Vicki
