Hi my name is Christina and I am an actor at the Juilliard School in New York and I am working on a new play right now about reborning and newborning dolls. I have been doing tons of research and I am stunned at the kind of work you all do. It is really impressive! I would love to some help from all of you on the inside of this amazing craft to help me make sure I represent your feild well. I would love any suggestions about magazines, websites, ect or doll shops/hospitals/reborn showrooms or New York based artists that I could visit. Also if anyone knows if there are any companies or individuals who have excess or reject doll parts that I could use onstage as props that would be amazing! Lastly the play deals primarily with one paticular customer who lost her child and is looking for a custom made doll that looks just like her daughter. I have read a lot about how this is an unusal circumstance and that this is not the intention of most reborners but has anyone ever encountered customers like this? How often does this kind of thing happen? And how do you deal with it? Thank you for any help! From one artist to another - you all do incredible work!
hmmm I think a few people here have done them, I think they are reffered to as memorial babies in the situation you are talking about. I am sure the others will help you out on this aspect as I am pretty new to this art form myself.
I actually found out about it from an article in a magazine here in Canada. And then researched in any way possible, Ebay and youtube were great resources for information and examples, even some news stories on the artisits and the people who buy the dolls. It seems to be something that is done all over the world and we have a great represenation here for our little family group.
Here is a link to the article that caught my interest, no pictures in the online version but at least you can read the story. it really is the amazing talent of some of the artists and their photos that capture the attention.
Bountiful Baby sells 2nds that you may be able to use in your play although you don't save *that* much money buying the 2nds.
Some people do specialize in memorial dolls. They can be used to help in the grieving process. Mostly, they are sold to doll collectors and others who love the artistry of them.
I started making them because I love dolls, have since I can remember. When I was "too old" for dolls my parents no longer bought them for me. In my 30's I realized I still loved dolls and bought a few of the Tonner dolls and Kish dolls which I made clothes for. The next step was to make my own doll by painting it. Of course like many art forms you have to practice to get any good! So I've made about 14 now. They are definitely better but I have not achieved the level I'm aiming for just yet! Anyhow, I guess the next step will be to sculpt my own.
Hello Christina I made porcelain dolls before I started reborning, and I had to make a male 36" for a lady for her to dress in her husbands cloths and make a pouch for his ashes to go in. It took a bit of convincing for me to make it. Although, I must say I have made an elf in memory of my son (Passed at age 5) he would be 40yrs old tomorrow 23/8/08.08) THe elf had many little charteristics and I inscribed ,In loving Memory of Sean in the greenware before it was fired. So there are people out there, that find comfort in the reborn babies. I know Precious Lullabyes has done one for a lady and when they received it, her and her husband cried. I also made one in memory of my Mum and Princess Dianna. No amount of money could make me part with them.June M from Oz.
