I know you aren't supposed to use bb pellets but can't remember exactly why... Pat B. Can you go over the technical reasons again? It was on the old forum...
BB Pellets in a reborn doll...now i havent heard of that b4! do people use them often? i would think that in the hot summer they might go off, maybe im thinking of something different??
THe BB's are just the metal balls, not the gunpowder, so there is no risk of them going off. I suspect the problem with them has something to do with possibilities of rust or some other sort of reaction with the vinyl.
Pat B , I know you can't use sand if you were to sell over seas but could you use a few lead sinkers, that is what is used i one of my porcelain dolls hands and feet according to the work sheet. June M from Oz
The reason you can't use bb's is because they are usually made out of lead... bad for kids and other things. They are ocassionally used to stuff mini teddy bears, homemade ones, but they should not be used in our dolls because the lead can leach out into the stuffing and out of the body, not good. You don't want a child to play with a doll that contains lead, and I don't want anyone else risking exposure.
That help?

June, I would still be worried about the discoloration of the steel shot working its way through the fabric of the bag and into the body, especially if the doll got damp or was in a humid climate....just me.

I too have been looking at different options for weighting my babies (something to kill the the time waiting for my kit) some of the things I looked into, weights for fishing and ankle and wrist weights for excersise. These were kinda more expensive but I may try it for a really special doll. I looked for ball bearings but could not find them any where. Then I did a run through our local dollar store and got this huge bag of glass marbles from the kids section for $1. I think I am going to try them first with some poly pellets and stuffing to eliminate the rattle.
Ok ladies (and gentlemen if you are listening lol). Here are the reasons...
As shaky said, with the bb's you may have the lead issue whether it be leaching out in the doll or the rust. I'm not really sure about them containing lead but I do know that if there is any moisture and it gets into the doll parts or cloth body (yes it does happen) even through humidity (you don't necessarily need to get the doll wet) that it can rust (like she said). Then it will contaminate, deteriorate, and discolor the cloth or vinyl.
Sand cannot be used in the dolls and shipped in or out of any country because it is considered "bio-hazard" by customs. Even if it is sterilized/cleaned/sanitized (and don't let the sellers/stockists fool you and say it is ok as it is NOT) customs will not let the doll through. It may even be destroyed by them (I have heard this on more than 1 occasion by more than one source) so then what do you tell your customer?
So... no metal in doll parts or bodies, no sand, no babyfat in contact with any doll part, ummm... I think that's all but if someone has anything else they would like to know if they can use, just let us know. :)
Well, I use a polystone fishtank gravel, and I know that at least one or two others here use it as well. It is much heavier then the pellets used and is less expensive. I have not shipped such a doll overseas yet... but you could always check with your local postal office and see what they have to say...
