i was just wanting to know a couple of things about secrist doll kits??
are they non-toxic ??
will the kit give off smelly fumes when baked in the oven?? (i am sooo sick of the fumes off my other kits lol)
now i have the secrist reborning 1&2 dvd's and they seem to only do "several" layers and the doll is done, is this all that secrist dolls should take to paint completely ?? thanks heaps!

are they non-toxic ?? (yep they are non toxic!)

now i have the secrist reborning 1&2 dvd's and they seem to only do "several" layers and the doll is done, is this all that secrist dolls should take to paint completely ?? thanks heaps! ( this boils down to an individual thing some ppl can do only 3 layers some like me can do 20 the dvds are a basic guide on how to reborn best thing to do is follow the dvd and see how you personaly feel about the outcome, you can then decide if you should add more or less etc)
hope this helps Pat if i got anything wrong let me know! hehehe

Secrist is the only kits made (to my knowledge) that state right on their website that they are NON-TOXIC! "Our doll kits use the highest quality vinyl available. Our vinyl meets strict US government guidelines that non-US factories do not meet. Secrist's non-toxic vinyl is safe for use in newborning practices"
"While there is an odor to the vinyl, especially noticeable when you cook it, it is completely non-toxic. Some people who are sensitive to smells (especially perfumes, etc) may react to the strong smell even though it is very safe.
While doll kits manufactured in China do occasionally have serious problems (consider all the recalls on toys that have happened lately) we always recommend you check with the manufacturer as to the contents of their vinyl.OUR vinyl is manufactured in the United States and adheres to extremely high standards requiring that the vinyl be safe enough that a person could literally eat it (don't do that!) and not suffer any toxic side effects...
Occasionally a vinyl part may have some "oil" on it from our production methods but even this is non-toxic.We hand wash every doll part before it leaves our factory.Safety is a very big concern for us since many of our dolls go to children."
The DVD Art of...1 is a general overview now as we have very excellent DVDs for everyone. May I suggest the Beginner classroom training and Advanced classroom. The beginner is great as it shows so many closeups and also comes with a CD that has pics of the steps and also has charts on were to put what and color photos of your paint palette so you know what your colors are supposed to look like. You can print them off for future reference. I like to print them on photo paper and then put them in a plastic sleeve protector.
When starting out it's nice to have something that you can learn from. Then like TEA said, you can go on after you learn the basics and design your own methods and how many layers you use and which/what kind. I tell my students to learn the basics and get proficient with them, then go on from there. Otherwise you have nothing really to base anything off of.
so would anyone know how the secrist kit smells compared to another kit when baked ???? ( i am very sensitive to smells ~ its took me a while to get used to the smell of warm vinyl !!!!!)

Kaz, would it be possible for you to purchase a second hand oven to bake yor kits in, this way you could put it on a table away from you untill any fumes evaporate. Or even a full stove, have you got a garage or car port. This could solve your problems. I know you can buy them on ebay or go to a demolishing salvage centre. My husband was into demolishing before he hurt himself and I have a second oven that I will be using.June M from Oz
They don't smell like anything to me. The only babies I have baked that smell weird are Berenguers-- they sort of smell like platics and baby powder. But I mostly do Secrist babies becuse they are easy to work with.
Thanks Heather and June :o) I would love to try every secrist kit lol... " I am soooo BABY CRAZY" (vinyl variety now lol) I am investing in a portable oven, thanks June ( i should've thought of that one lolol) chat soon *hugz*

I have baked many brands of babies and the Secrist (compared to the others) smell, if any, is extremely mild and almost not noticeable (lest you stick your nose right in them hot from the oven). But don't do that, I'm joking :)
The other doll kits (especially the Berenguers) really smell!!! I have a portable tabletop oven (don't buy a toaster oven) and if I'm going to bake some babies that are not Secrist, AV, or DD, I take it outside and set it on a table and have at.
