I always wash my doll parts before I begin.  I use really hot water and sometimes a little dish soap if the inside feels a little oily.  I rinse them off well and then pat them dry as best as I can with a paper towel and then set them on a holder (dowels and styrafoam) to drip and air dry overnight.  I find that with an internal wash/dye that if I don't do this the paint/dye does not spread evenly.

I hope this helps.   Dragon

Just make sure not to use Palmolive! It has some kind of moisturizer in it that makes the paint not stick!

Yes, usually any kind of dish detergent as long as it doesn't have hand softeners in it. It leaves a residue.
You can use the ones for grease busting. Hot water works best. I usually leave mine for 2 days but you could put them in an oven to dry faster (just make sure you shake most of the water out).
If you leave water in your vinyl, it can cause mold to form inside, so this is why you want to dry your parts well.

Secrist says their doll kits need no prior washing as their process doesn't leave any residue on the parts. But some people wash all their doll parts regardless.
