Iuse the plastic one ,I find it easy to assemle with the needles and haven,t had any bother with it. Secrists have them. I know some of the ladies dont use them at all, just the needle.June M from Oz
yes buy the secrist plastic mushroom pin vice, it really saves the RSI somewhat in your fingers / hands and is easy to use (i found) and the other ladies are spot on you dont have to cut your needles like you would with other devices ... :o)

Yes, I have both the wooden pin vise, and the plastic one. You have to cut your needles for the wooden one (or buy them already cut), and with the plastic one you can use uncut needles (way better)... I hardly use the wooden one anymore!
I personally love the plastic one. I ordered one for one of my students and she was having issues using it. She just couldn't hold it like I do. So I ordered the wooden one with precut needles and it fits her just right. So I traded her the plastic one for the wooden one. Now she's happy and rooting away!
It's all in how comfortable you are with them I think. I believe Shakeyhandsme (Pat C) doesn't use any (don't quote me lol). But I like the larger plastic one as I have had carpel tunnel surgery (it was long ago) but the wooden one hits me wrong in the palm of my hand. But the plastic one fits. Isn't that funny?
I heard people say the bakelite knobs are ok too but never tried one. I believe for me it wouldn't suit my purpose.
I just love the plastic one. Until now, I was using just rubber bands wrapped around the top of the needle, and was breaking LOTS!! I have not broken a single needle since then. Yeah!!
Besides how it fits my hand, I love the plastic one because you can use ANY uncut needle, not just the ones from Secrist (oops! did I say that? lol). I have needles from "other" places and I don't want to have to cut them. I don't use any handle when I root the eye lashes though! More control that way and it's just a short use for them.
