It seems that there are alot of us on here that are new to reborning and are looking for an inexpensive way to practice our skills. I just found Berenger kits on a website that are being clearanced at $19 each. They include 3/4 arms and legs and a cloth body. Anyway I thought you guys might like to know. PM me if you want the website. I just ordered 5 kits. I hope my husband doesn't shoot me!
Cool! I may just get one. I will warn you that most people who I know who have bought them loved the faces and limbs but ended up buying different bodies for them!
these kits usually go at about $29. The only thing about them is that being berenguer the vinyl is quite hard and you'll need to be sure to heat the head with your rooting or you'll break a billon needles on them.
I second Naomi, the vynal is very hard an takes forever to root unless you have the patience to sand off all the groves on the head, I think the full limbs are too stubbie and you also have to make a new body. I went out and bought about 8from Target, I ended up giving them to the Grand kids. You have to make a rice sack and heat it in the microwave , to root the head, when it goes cold you have broken a rooting needle, I broke about 5 on my first Berenguer and probably the same on my second. Costly when you don,t break any on the Secrist and you can strip them if you not happy.June M from Oz
These are actually different then the ones from Target. The vinyl is soft and they are kits so no head sanding or wigging! "They" realized that the dolls made beautiful kits so they started producing the kits in Spain with soft vinyl, no hair line, etc. I've seen several done and they are adorable.
Naomi or whomever can help Have you used these kits? How do you heat the head? They aren't as hard as the Berenger dolls in the store right? I am going to do my Secrist kit first and then these ones, I think.
I checked with people on a different forum who have used these kits and they are as soft as the BB heads. The difference is that the faces aren't soft, the area that is to be rooted is!
The best way I found to heat a head is with a rice sock. I put rice in a sock, stick it in the microwave with a cup full of water and heat it for 2-3 minutes. The water helps the rice absorb the heat without actuallly getting it wet. For my Willow, Guppy fairy, her head was too small for the sock so someone suggested I just put the rice directly in the head and then stuff the bottom. It worked beautifully!
The new Berenguer kits from Spain are supposed to be better as far as no stripping color and the first ones released did have hairlines but the next ones and from then forward don't. I have heard that they are not as orangey colored either.
Secrist has test parts that you can get for a minimal cost so I like to do that. You can get a part for about $2 to practice on so I guess that's even cheaper than the dolls in the long run.
Yes. I stripped my 1/4 limbs from my first two doll kits to practice on for my Sparrow. Hopefully I can get the technique down before painting her. I have an idea of how I want to paint her, but I don't have to want to strip her at all.
HI, I, too, am brand new & awaiting my 1st kit in the mail, so I definitely need to do some practicing. Could you share the name of that clearance website?? Thank you
ou can get the same kits here: http://www.hunnybunsrebornsupply.com/berenguer_doll_kits
They come with a body that some have expressed a dislike in. I haven't started either of my kits yet, so I can't really say. The bodies are *not* jointed so if you want jointed ones you have to order them separately.
The kits are slightly discounted AND she just charges cost of shipping.
hi, i just started to reborn. i been practicing with the secrist limb and im ready to practice on a real doll. can you please let me know were to get them. i will trully appreciate it. thanks, Ellie
Ellierd, please note that the Berenguer's you buy at Walmart are not the same vinyl as the kits. The Walmart Berenguers have very hard vinyl. This is fine with a wig, but if you plan to root the hair, they will be VERY frustrating. The vinyl is as hard as a rock, so will have to be heated every 15-25 minutes. You can do it (I did it for my first rooting job), but if I was to do it again, I would buy a softer kit. This is more expensive, though. You may do whatever you want. Just weigh the benefits and downsides before you make a purchase anywhere. I hope this advice is helpful. Let us know what you decide to do, and we will help you as much as we can with whatever your choice is.

Another option is the Cititoy True to Life dolls. They are cheaper and softer than the Berenguers. I can't find them at my Walmart, but they might still be available at some other ones.
I personally stay away from actual dolls. They require the removal of paint (which is an issue of using nasty stuff like goof-off). They are also generally harder to root (because of the vinyl). You have to remove the hair line or root very thickly to cover it, or wig the doll. If you want to practice and not actually complete the doll, that is something else.
HEATHER, I GOT THE BERENGER AND YOU WERE RIGHT THE HEAD IS HARD SO I PUT A WIG ON THE BABY, WHAT YOU THINK MY GRANDAUGHTER LOVES IT. BUT I THINK IT STILL LOOKS LIKE A DOLL AND NOT A BABY.
She is absolutely too cute. I took one of those 6 inch berenguers and put a little hair on it for my grandson. He is 3 and he just loves his little baby. Your baby is sweet!
I have yet to attempt a doll but she is ADORABLE!!! My first attempt will be a store berenguer,, didn't want to spend a lot of money and toys-r-us had a sale.
Ireene , I think you need to get the dvd on Genesis painting or see if anyone on the forum has finished with one that you can purchase second hand, I have just bought on of ebay, so I guessing after you have seen it a few times, you no longer need it. June M from Oz.
