Mo, first of all, what vinyl are you rooting? Are you doing directional rooting, or regular? I noticed while rooting on Berenguer vinyl, if I did too directional of a root (like laying my needle literally almost flat on the vinyl), you could see the dark mohair through the vinyl, and yes, marks that looked like they could easily come off and look like cradle cap. Either you can advertise it as a baby with authentic cradle cap :) , or you can just try holding your needle a little straighter until you get the desired effect. I'm not an expert, as I've only rooted one baby, but hope this tip helps.

i've noticed this can happen with needles with really sharp barbs. I think the barbs can kind of tear at the vinyl when they puncture it.

i use the german barbless needles now. But if your not ready to try them, i suggest trying the crown felting needles instead.
