This little boy entered our world yesterday evening. Birth from secrist Zoe... I haven't chosen a name for him yet.
From start to finish, he took just 7hrs.
Its been so long since i'd last worked a secrist kit and i was surprised at how wonderful and easy the vinyl was to both paint and root after working on other kit brands. It was an absolute delight, and the delicate featured of this little kit have been sculpted to perfection.
Awwwww! I just love him! That is exactly the look I was trying to go for with my Zoe, but I did not capture it the way you did. And I used brown hair. You did such a fantastic job:)
Beegirl - the hair i used on this one is "Med Brown - straight" mohair from Lyns reborn world, in australia.
i get hair from numerous places, always trying different suppliers. This har was actually lovely and soft and the colouring really natural. Sometimes you get browns that look a little green. It can be really difficult purchasing hair online b/c the colourings might look good on the computer screen but can be quite different when they arrive.
I had some hair arrived yesterday from hong kong. The colouring is devine, perfection. But it is rather course - it feels like human hair but not like an infants, the texture is more of an older child/adults... i haven't tried using it as yet, so i'm not sure how its going to look once rooted.
Naomi, he's beautiful. How on earth do you finish your babies in 7 hours and yet do such a great job?? It takes me at least a week to root mine. Plus I'm using the Archival Oils mineral spirits now and that takes at least 4 hours to dry before I can get them into the oven. They mess up if I lie the pieces down before they're dry. So it takes me so much longer to lay down all my different layers. You amaze me how you can do this so quickly! Wow!
oh one thing about Achival solvent -- its doesn't air dry like many of the other ones... but its fine to put straight in the oven. I just lie mine pieces on fabric and they come out fine.
some ppl use a wooden type holder -- like a chopping board base, with dowel rods that have been nailed to stand up-right. They then place the limbs on these rods inserting the rod into the limb opening. That way no painted part in touching the base.
B/c i use a small benchtop convection oven its not really big enough for me to use this wooden setup - i'd have to put the tray on the bottom rung and this would put the wood too close the the elements (one inches above) and it would begin to burn after a few cooks. So i continue to use fabric on a tray in the middle rung of my oven.
I think having the benchtop oven does make it a little quicker for me too though. It takes no time at all to heat up, and i work in an assembly line type process -- i.e while pianting the head, i'll have arms cooking and legs cooling. This way i don't have wasted time while waiting for my bits to cook and cool before working again. By splitting them up i can have a constant revolving line.
I do work fast, but you need to remember that i've now done 70 or so babies... its a matter of practise. Also remember that this is all i do, full time. I don't have another job or my own children to juggle - i tend to spend 14-16 hrs a day working on a baby in some way.
When i started, rooting took me 3 full days work. Now it tends to take only an evening while watching TV (or listening to the TV as i do still need to watch what i'm doing with the rooting so as not to stick myself with the needle).
Zoe took such a small amount of time also b/c she's just so tiny esp after working on large sculpts such as Riva's or the Stoete toddler i just did a week or so ago.
Also to be working back on secrist vinyl has been wonderful. Its so easy and quick to work, again especially after having been working on many pink or dark vinyls which take allot more work to get a trully natural complextion.
anyways loves and hugs to all and thanks for all the compliments... i was prtty pleased myself with how Zoe turned out. I finished a gumdrop this morning but haven't assembled her just yet, and have just started working on Jasmine.
Amazing! You've inspired me to paint her again. She was my first GHSP. When I get all the techniques down that I want to learn I'll buy the sculpt again and paint a second one!
My first couple of Zoe were done with black hair and the other a redhead. I used artist pastel chalks on them (just like I did on ceramics) but I didn't get near the real effect on them as with the Genesis. But one grandma adopted the boy for a 9 year old, and the other one went to a 21 year old collector. So who am I to say they weren't good. I mean they were, but not near the detailing.
