I just started rooting my Zoe baby and I don't know what is wrong! I am using 38 gauge 3 barbed needle and Secrist mohair. I got a brown color, it was not the ultra or english mohair but I did not think it was supposed to be economy. I seems a little course and even a little curly, and when I try to root, the needle does not always catch the hair and it leaves a hole. I have the beginner classroom DVD and watched the small section on rooting on there, so I have at least seen how to do it. I am trying rooting from the crown out this time and as I am going along, the hair that I have already rooted is breaking or falling out! I am getting quite frustrated and would like to know what I should do, should I stop and get a better quality mohair, or is it my needles?
Do the needles in fact "go blunt"? I have found that rooting can be fine, and grabs the mohair very well - then, further down the line, after lots of rooting, it fails to grab - so I get out another needle - and everything is fine again. It seems that the needles wear out - could this be right?
Does anyone think I would do better with a needle with more barbs? Since I am visually impaired maybe it would help me pick the hair up better? Just a thought, thanks!
It could be the needles, yes. The standard mohair is ok quality stuff, I use it sometimes. I haven't had a problem. You will need to condition it more though.
Yes, the needles can go dull, from use, from rooting too fast and creating heat, and just plain old some needles are not good/they're not all the same.
You might want to try the 6 barb needles as they will grab more hair. But do you want more hair on your baby, that is the question because it will be rooted thicker. I don't remember if you said you use a magnifier or not. If not, that may help you with using your current needles. Or yes, change to a new one and see if that's better. Remember, all these needles are mass-produced so they will not all be the same, even in a batch.
i really don't like the barbed felting needles at all, when using felting needles i found that the crown needles worked best - they do still have 3 barbs but all at the tip of the needles instead of down the length of the sharft and they arn't as "sharp" as the standard felting needle barbs seem to be -- sometimes i think the barbs cut the mohair when you stab through it. It can cut strands that it doesn't pick up.
i use the barbless german rooting needles, but for thoes who find these difficult or are hasitant about trying them (i love them so much i should become their ambassator -- seriously love love love them)!! Anyway, those that are wanting to stick with felting needles i really recommend try the crown ones.
As for thinking about trying one with more barbs - this will pick up more hair and plant it in your babies head, but its going to give a more plugged appearance which doesn't look so natural.

still my love affair is with the german rooting needles and i could never go back to even the crown needles - honestly people they are not as scary as the "warning" that seems to accompany them about suggesting experianced reborners useing them only. This scared me off at first but am so glad i went out on a limb and ordered a sample pack. And i'd only done maybe 10 or so babies when i did so and was still developing my own skills and technique.
My personal oppinion is that they are a dream to work with. I use the 42g. the 43g i do find more difficult as they are so fine that unless you have areally fine first shear mohair, they really wont pick up the hair.
I actually think that when starting out, it would be best to develop your abilities around these needles, my personal feeling is that if you've become too use to the felting needles that you might actually find the rooting needles more difficult as you do need to learn a slightly different way of using these. everyone one finds rooting soemwhat difficult at first, so why not learn on a needle that in the long run will make your rooting look better and is quicker and easier
(Note - this is personal experiance only, and personal opinion only)
Thanks, Naomi. I want to try rooting my next doll from the end of the hair instead of the middle. I may purchase a few German needles to try that. The two seem like they go hand-in-hand. We'll have to see what my annual raise turns out to be next month in after-tax dollars!
