with hard vinyls i actually heat the entire head in the oven for about 4 or 5 mins, it should then remain workable for about 1/2 a hour or so. And yes you can put it back in the oven and heat again with the mohair already partly rooted... i promise it doesn't dry it at all and you dont need to wet it or anything.

the only time not to put in the oven is if you've already applied synthetic eyelashes as they kind of shrink up.

When you heat your rice sock do you put water in the microwave in a cup with it? I think the added moisture may help it stay hotter longer!

yeah varnishes don't take kindly to repeated heating.

all the best with the rice sock -- i've not used rice but have used wheat, i'm sure they probably heat the same but am going through it out there that it could be possible that rice doesn't hold heat as well. You always see wheat bags for sale, never rice bags... just wondering if there could be something to the heat conductivity (is that even a word? LOL) of wheat Vs rice.

personally though i just found it anoying trying to keep the sock in the head but not touching the vinyl (so as not to root into it), that i quickly gave up and stuck the head in the oven and found this method worked better for me when working with a hard vinyl sculpt.

Naomi, what temp do you put the oven at when you heat the head? The 275 we always do?
And Loves, I love your guppy fairy! I wish I could see a close-up of her.

It may just be that you are going to have to do the frequent heating of the rice sock because the vinyl is so hard. The only other thing I can think of is how long are you heating the sock for? Most recently I "cooked" the sock for 2 minutes.

I purchased 2 hydrangea heads at the local fabric/craft store. I pulled them apart to sew on her outfit. She is photographed in a real flowering bush, though.

Thank you :)

With the rice sock, you shouldn't fill it so full that you root into the sock when you leave it in. If you put a cup of water in the microwave next to the rice sock and heat that way the heat should last for 15-20 minutes each time (or maybe longer). But always leave the sock in the head while rooting.
Yes it can be tedious doing it this way but it is really easier to root with the head warm. And you are rignt not to put your head in the oven with the varnishes on.

ooh i saw that one on rebornaustralia.com the proto-type of this little one didn't really grab me (it wasn't bad, it just did "call" to me) but as a kit i think it does have postential to be a little cutie -- i can't wait to see what you've done with it, i know you have the tallent to do it justice.

Yes, I like the fact that we show a picture of the sculpt blank too! It leaves a lot to the imagination of newborners! I also like being able to see others ways of newborning the same faces.
