I just tried to "bake" my baby for the first time, and it did not go well at all! I applied my purple wash and pre-heated my oven to 265 degrees. I put my doll parts on parchment paper (double layer) and put everything in and set the timer for ten minutes and stayed to watch. Within just a few minutes (like 5 min?) my baby had melted and my parchment paper was brown! I don't know what I did wrong except maybe that I did not have an oven thermometer checking the temp of my oven. But I really don't think I had it so hot that it should melt everything! Can anyone help tell me what went wrong? Thanks!
Hi,.. Its your oven,.... the temperature in your oven was way to hot,..you better buy a thermometer and only put your vinyl parts in the oven when you are sure it is safe.
Ok, I have a friend coming over with her oven thermometer and a new kit coming thanks to Secrist! I also ordered the heat gun so that I can use my oven for this hobby as little as possible. My only concern is what checking my oven temp will tell me. I hope my oven can actually keep a temp that low.
I also wonder if the parchment paper was enough to shield the parts from the heat, they got pretty scorched on the bottom where they were touching the pan.
If my oven just turns out to be evil, is there any way I can set my internal purple wash layer using the heat gun?

Perhaps try using a towel or pillowcase rather than the paper. I use a pillowcase and it seems to work well.
i use fabric to protect my vinyl pieces... but she MELTED?? Oh my... i've not seen that happen before... and once like an idiot i left a head in my oven for about 2 hrs... when i remembered i freaked... but it was totally undamaged - i was very lucky
Ok, I think I figured out what happened. My oven has a seperate dial to set the temp, different from the one to turn it on, and this dial looks the same on both sides except for a small indentation where it points to the temp. The dial is all black. Keep in mind that I am visually impaired. When I went to bake, one side of the dial was pointed down to the lowest setting, makes sense right? So, I turned it up to 265 degrees and proceded to bake. Well, the dial must have been pointing the opposite direction, so when I turned it up, I actually turned it to broil! I broiled my baby! I feel so horrible :( My husband is going to take a little white paint and paint the indentation so it is easier for me to see on the all black dial. I feel like such a ditz!
Does your oven have a pre-heat light? When you turn on your oven there should be a little light that comes on automatically(mine id on the back of my stove). When your internal oven tempature reaches 265* the light will go off. This to let you know it is ready to bake. Always put an oven thermometer in your oven to check the tempature( a lot of oven's are not correct on their temp.) TIP: I bake my doll parts on a layer of poli-fill batting cut to fit inside my baking pan (cookie sheet). This is great and keeps the limbs off the heated pan and the air circulates around the doll better for more even baking. Just make sure your body parts do not touch any part of your pan edges. I hand my oven thermometer in the middle of my oven where I can see it. It is well worth buying one to get your tempature correct.
Poor you, poor baby! I can imagine that broiling is not a good idea ;) Why are you baking for 10 minutes? I think that is too long unless you have done an internal wash or matte varnish! No? I do mine for 8 minutes!
Loves, I had just done my internal wash, which was why I was going for 10 min. as I have seen suggested here. I know the baking time is usually just 8 min., other than an internal wash. Am I right on that?
I did get an oven thermometer and plan on watching it like a hawk! My husband also painted the arrows on our oven dials so that I can actually see them lol! Thanks for the tip about the batting, I think I will try that.
Anyway, now I am just waiting for my replacement parts to have another try. Pray for this next baby!
Okay! Just wanted to make sure. Yes, 8 minutes for external painting except for matte varnish and 10 minutes for matte varnish and internal wash! I knew that wasn't why your baby melted since you figured it out yourself before I saw the thread. I was cooking too high -- for some reason I was doing 270 instead of 265!
OMG! Beegirl. OMG! poor broiled baby! It was sad and at the same time I burst out in a laugh because of how you said it "I broiled my baby!"! I mean I'm sorry, I know it's not funny when we damage our babies in an attempt to bake them (and that comment doesn't sound right either, lol), and being visually impared is not easy either but in looking back now, can you laugh? I mean once you get your replacement baby?
Or maybe wait a week or so (after you have successfully baked your new baby) and then read how you worded your post.
I have a BB baby kit I was doing and I had my oven set at 365 and I melted her feet! So much so that one foot is flat and the others toes came off the parchment and stuck to the metal pan!!! I still have them as a reminder to me to always have a thermometer and look at it. Someone had turned my dial higher and I didn't pay attention! So good thing I could get replacement limbs. Oh yeah, her finger prints are alllll gone, they melted flat to the pan and now her fingertips look like a tree frog hand, flat like suction cups!!! Funny now but not then. I think a lot of us have made boo-boo babies for one reason or another. Glad you are getting a replacement AND the thermometer. I found out that my oven runs 25 degrees hotter than it says on the stove.
And 5 degrees (ferenheit) over is ok, just not below 265 or below 8 minutes Loves.
That's why I like my heatgun... I have to hold the doll part in my hand while I'm heating it.... melt the part, melt the hand. It just seems to give me more control... and costs less then running my oven all the time. Sorry you are having so much trouble with that!

Thanks gals, I can laugh about it now, though I still feel bad for baby! I am ready to go when my replacement arrives. I also orderd the heat gun so that I can use that for smaller areas so I don't have to put baby in the oven as many times. I know I will still need to use the oven for the big stuff like the internal wash and my overall flesh tone, but I have my thermometer now so it should be safer. I will keep you all posted on my progress.
Ya, except for my little Avery, luckily I haven't made any bin-babies. It wasn't funny how you melted it, it was the wording. Melting a baby is very sad. I'm glad you got the heat gun. I use mine for the 6" minis, then lips, brows and nails. Sometimes I use it for the final blush layer as there isn't as much area to cover.
