Has anyone used these paints by secrist?  I was wondering if they are worth the purchase?  Do they really help since they are premixed?  I am thinking about getting it, but wanted to hear the feedback first.

What are the pros and cons?

Zona,  Pros:  They are premixed...  All you need to do is scoop some out and thin it down and paint.

Cons:  They are expensive.

If you have any experience with mixing colors or are willing to try it I would get the paints elsewhere... Sorry Secrist!  You can get most of the normal skin colors in larger jars for about what you pay them for the little ones.  As far as tinting colors, your blues and such, you can also get them. The jars you would get from an "art" company will be larger and last longer.  The same goes for thinning medium and glazes.

I know I'm bad, so just yell at me and get it over with.   Crying 1

HELLO
I HAVE NOT TRIED THE STRAWBERRY PAINTS,BUT I HAVE USED PRE-MIXED PAINTS FROM A DIFFERENT COMPANY.I DID LIKE THE FACT OF NOT HAVING TO GUESS HOW MUCH OF THIS OR THAT TO USE.

I DO MIX MY OWN COLORS NOW,AND AS A HAIR STYLIST IT IS EASY FOR ME TO TRY DIFFERENT SHADES OF COLORS TO SEE WHAT I'LL COME UP WITH NEXT.

I SAY GIVE IT A TRY!!! AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU KNOW NOT TO BUY PRE-MIXED.

GOOD LUCK

Pat C....  No Duh OK, I didn't want to be too hard on you lol

I do like the pre-mixed because:
I don't have to think about mixing;
I can just add thinner (of some kind) and go;
They are small pots that are easily stored (& transportable should you need it);
I can get what I need in one spot (all the colors in a set);
If I don't NEED a large amt (of the blue, lips, brows, creases/wrinkles) I don't have to waste my $$ getting the large ones;
You can do quite a few dolls with one small set;
AND last but not least: If you don't want to continue you haven't got as much invested as if you had purchased all those colors in the large jars!

Yes they might seem a little expensive at first but think of all the steps it saves you in the long run. Then if you want to keep newborning you only have to buy more of SOME of the paints (flesh colors & the perwinkle blue for the internal wash). The other colors will still be plenty enough.
I personally see no cons the way I do it. (IMHO)

For GHSP and how long they last (ie how many babies you can make with them) the pre-mixed really aren't expensive at all. All the points Buffington makes are right on target. I wish they had been around when I started last Fall! I did end up buying the petite set (not premixed) from Hunnybuns Nursery, a distributor of Secrists (she is also featured in their DVD's).

Not bad, at all! I think it is important that we all share our experiences. I spent about 18 months "studying" newborning and reborning before investing any money. I'm glad I waited! I learned a lot by reading varying opinions and experiences. I'd hate it if someone took my advice without reading others because *gulp* sometimes I'm wrong ;) LOL.

Strawberry Paints - what are they - and why are they called "strawberry paints"? I have not used the matte varnish yet - but do I really need it??

Cuisle, we use the matte varnish to prevent shine. Even if your baby isn't shiney when you're done, just the dressing and handling can eventually make it become shiny and lessen the realism somewhat. Also, I think the matte varnish gives the skin some texture.

Our original colors in the premixed paints can do a "peaches n cream" complexion. However, some use doll kits with a slight orangy tint to the vinyl (or v/s mix) so they can get an even more orangy tint to their babies (since peaches are kinda orangy color).

Secrist, being an inovator has come up with a "strawberries n cream" mix (strawberries are more of a reddish color) of colors for those who want a little more rosie or redish tone to their babies. So now you can choose!

As far as the matte sealer, no you don't "need" to use it but as was pointed out, if you change your baby's clothes or handle them much (the babies not the clothes hahaha) they can become shiny. So some use it just as a general finish on the vinyl. And it can also be used to give your babies skin a textured look.
FYI: DO USE IT STRAIGHT FROM THE CONTAINER, NO THINNING, JUST STIR IN JAR BEFORE USE :) Otherwise it defeats the purpose.

Gosh - thanks for that. I have now seen some "strawberry paints" in Robyn's (our local (New Zealand) distributor) listings. I have ordered some crimson 01 from her - I could make my own mixes (being an artist, using oil paints, the one thing I AM used to is mixing colours). I have recently transfromed (my own opinion) an ugly orangey vinyl doll into a tiny newborn baby, possibly with this "strawberry" complexion. I wish I could show you, but I have no camera. Anyway, I LOVE the Genesis Heat Set Paints - expecially now that I am getting used to them. I believe I'm hoplessly addicted to reborning/newborning now - after a very short time. I love this Forum - such a lot of helpful, friendly advice and tips. :)

Glad we could help Caroline.

And isn't Robyn a dear? I just adore her. And she's a very talented reborner also. She'll never stear you wrong.

Hi Ladies!!
The premixed strawberry paint is great!! i requested Secrist to mix this color because of the other premixed colors where to orangy in my oppinion i also tested this paint on a Sassy head and you really cannot go wrong with this premixed color.You only need a very tiny amount straight from the jar,...no thinning medium ...it is just right as it is for the lips the creases and the wrinkles.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. So far I have done 1 baby (a Berenguer) and I'm working on my 2nd (also a Berenguer). For my next one I want to do a Secrist Zoe with Genesis Paints. I've been using Stencil Cream Paints and Acrylics for my first 2. So here's my questions: If I use the Strawberry Paint set, what other paints do I still need? Also, how many dolls will the Strawberry Paint set do? I have a low budget (seeing I'm only 15 and haven't sold any dolls yet), so I want the most cost-effective set possible with no extras. In the Sassy doll shown that Danielle Zweers newborned, were the Strawberry Paints really the only ones used in the whole process (ie. no internal wash, etc...)? Thank-You so much for the help. I'm really looking forward to this forum, seeing I'm just a beginner. :)

Miss,

The strawberry colors are for blushing and creases. You would still need the flesh tones, eyebrow colors, etc. You could probably skip the internal wash if you are short on money. I think that you could probably buy a petite premixed paint set with everything you need though.

Thank you so much, Heather. I think I'll just buy the strawberry set, the flesh colors, and the periwinkle blue internal wash, plus something for the eyebrows. If I can, I'll use the periwinkle blue for the veining, too. Could I use one of the strawberry paints for the reddish capillaries on the eyelids? And if there's any paints I'm missing, could any of you tell me which ones? Thank you again.

Danielle, could you please tell me if on the Sassy head that is pictured on the Secrist website with the Strawberry Paints is really only done using the Strawberry Paints? If you did use another paint, could you tell me what you used? I love the way it turned out, so if you really didn't use any flesh tones or anything else, I'll go with that. Also, about how many dolls will the set make? Thank-You so much.

Yes, she did use just the strawberry paints (except for the eyebrows) to paint Sassy. You will find how to do that technique on the "Special reborn encyclopedia" DVD. It is a 3 step techinque developed, used, and taught by Danielle herself. She uses it on her 6" mini triplets in the dvd. Since the Secrist vinyl blanks are just the right color for baby skin, and according to the webpage she was "created using only the Strawberry Complexion paint set."

May I suggest, one of you ladies who has connections with Secrist: could you ask them to make a premixed paint set, like the one they have, but use the strawberry paint set to replace the 'orange' ones it includes? They could still offer the set with the 'orange ones', just then there would be two options, peaches and cream or strawberries and cream. And they could still sell the strawberry set alone. Just an idea, but then you never know . . . . . . Thanks.

That is a good idea.  In the meantime, you can use red which tones down the orange color.  My guess is that they didn't put quite enough in which is why we are getting orange.  BB has the same problems with their blushing color in the pre-mix set.

Now I am thinking of just doing the strawberry paints again. I just saw the instructions on the Secrist page for these , could I still get a fairly blotchy/mottled newborn complexion following these directions with just the strawberry paints? Also, could I use one of them for the tinting the fingernails, and also for the capillaries on the eyes? I would still probably do the internal wash, and maybe try just burnt umber for the eyebrows. Possibly one of the flesh tones for toning down the burnt umber and for the nail tips. I would love to see any pictures any of you might have of babies done with the strawberry paints. Thanks.

They are in the process of doing just that! Mr Secrist looks at posts in forum from time to time and saw the need for it too! So keep watching the website, it should be available soon.
And thanks for the suggestion! :)

Really!!! That's so cool! That's definitely the perfect set for me: no mixing (which I'm awful at) and all the perfect colors. Which pre-mixed set will be included with the basic starter kit (or will there be an option, which would be ideal)? Thank you so much.

Coming soon, I hope?  I can't wait to order them.  (I know, I need to be more patient, but I just can't wait)  :)  Buffington, could you post a link to them here once they're available?  I don't want to miss them just because I don't see them on the website.  Thanks.

Danielle!!!! You're back!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!! I had e-mailed you some time ago and got not answer and then you were not on the forum. I was about to send the dogs out to find you girl!!! You had me worried. Also, there is another thread with a compliment for you, but with my one braincell (hehehe) I can't remember which one :o  I think it was about the mini triplets.

Ms R... yes, they will be out soon. Also there will be a choice of either with the premixed set AND they will be available by themselves (the set of 3 of either ones).

Then I was just notified that the premixed paints will all be online separately also.
Coming soon, will post link when avail! :)

Yay, I just saw them on the website!!!! I'm going to place my order. Can't wait to start my next baby! And I see that they're an option with the starter kit, too. So now I just have to decide if I want Jasmine with the starter kit or Zoe with buying everything seperately. I'm so excited!

The premixed complexion paint sets are now only $12.00 and you don't need to add odorless thinner either!

Check out our new mini-tutorial on applying the complexion paints at this link.

Our premixed paints have received rave reviews.  But we still sell the basic colors because there is always satisfaction in mixing your own from scratch!  (But who has the time these days?!?) biggrin
