O.K, It's official, I HATE EMBER, LOL. No, but seriously, I fell in love with the Ember doll a long time ago and wanted to make one for myself but no matter what I do I can not do that doll. It doesn't matter if I make the paint thin or thick, if I colour correct the pink vinyl or anything. Also I just can't get the paint into the spaces near the eyes and nose and the palms of the hands. the fingers are giving me trouble too and the feet. Reading this I sound like the worlds worst reborner but I'm not honest, LOL. I have made quite a few dolls now and sold some too and people are fooled by my dolls so I don't know why I am having such a hard time with this doll kit. It really knocks my confidence when I try to do this doll. Has anyone else had this problem with this kit or is it just me. Like I said she is my very favourite of all the babies I have seen and I am so dissapointed at not being able to have a sucsess with this doll. Has anybody got a clue as to where I am going wrong with this kit or should I just give up and sell the kit on once it is stripped down (YET AGAIN). Thanks Karen. X
I would set her aside and walk away for awhile. Sometimes when I've painted I've had to let a doll go for a couple of weeks before I come back.
If you go to the bountiful baby forum you might be able to post pictures and get some help for where you are stuck with her, AFTER you give yourself a break! ;)
loves dolls is right, sometimes you just over work a doll, becoming so frustrated and dissillusioned. Take a break from her, work on another doll or two before coming back to her.
i know also at times when i've become frustrated and hate everthing i do to one of my babies, when i keep adding and trying over and over i begin to think nothing is working out and can get myself so worked up that i just want to throw the thing away. I have to force myself to stop, to step back and do something else. Sometimes its just a state of mine and when i come back to the baby the next day i realise that it actually looks fine and it wasn't the doll that was the problem after all rather my mood at the time. I'm a terrible perfectionist and sometimes this can work against me. If my mood is low then i often enter a state of mind where anything and everything i do isn't good enough. If i step back, go out for a while clear my head more often than not i find its not the doll that was problematic but my thougts and own criticism.
Don't give up, just take a break - a day, a week, a few weeks if need be. Work on another baby in the mean time to boost your confidence again and approch Ember a new once you've cleared your head from the frustration.
Karen, These ladies have given some good advice. However... I do need to let you know that not only have we had 2-3 others in forum (the old one) that had many similar problems with the Ember kit, they also had problems with Kinsey. I believe what else was suggested was to put a light coat of Genesis matte sealer on the entire doll and bake. Then their paints were sticking. They, like you, were going to throw their babies in the trash too! But all worked out for the best and they did finish their dolls. Must just be something about some of those S/V mix kits.
So, let it rest a while and then try the matte. Oh yes, use it straight (after mixing it in the container) and do not use any thinner with it. That defeats the purpose.
Let us know if it works for you. Otherwise you can always send her to my house... I have other orphans she can comiserate with. They were also going to become "bin babies"! lol
Hi Karen your not alone hun belive me hehehe Ember was my most favorite too i must have stripped her 5 times! everytime i did somthing it didnt look right to me, then oneday my mum came to visit id just done my 4th layer and ember was sitting on the bench cooling down from the oven she wowed over her said she looked great i said your kiddin me right? hehe anyways after a long discussion mum said to me has it ever occured to you that your favorite might just be the one your going to be most critical over? looking back i realised i wasnt so fussy with the other ones, so i made myself fully complete her no matter what i thought! the result was a stunning little baby she didnt seem that stunning to me at first so i got her ready and put her on ebay she sold for quite alot $370.00 i still to this day look over her photos and wish id never sold her I hope this helps you in some way xxxxx
PS: to get into the corner of the eyes and the palms etc try using a small stencil brush dabbing the paint into the pieces it worked for me

i I am only a new reborner too, I have been making porcelain dolls for 21 yrs, so have found it interesting and not as hard as I first thought it would be. i have also sold three of my dolls and past the hobby onto my youngest daughter. She has only made 2 but has sold them already.I,v just finished the trilets. at first I didn,t like the body but got lazy and used it they came up realy nice. I cut the eyes out and put little glass ones in, that made it easy, also used little lashes and cut them short. I know a lot of doll reborners are using Genesis heat set paint, but I have been using Color Box crafters pigment ink, it to is heat set in a normal kitchen oven on 130degrees for 15 mins. It is also water based so you can thin it. Dont give up on your dream. Old saying, if at first you dont succeed try, try again, I,m surwe you will get the results your looking for. June M from Oz.
hello everyone, Thank you yo all of you for your words of encouragement and advice. I am going to strip her back and then leave her alone for a few weeks to get my head together then have another try. Thanks all.

Hi Cheri, Your Ember is beautiful, Just hope I have as much sucsess with mine in the end. Just out of curiosity what kit are those arms from They aren't the arms that come with Ember are they? they look lovely. My Ember is all stipped down again and I am going to take the advice of eveyone and take a breather for a few weeks with that kit. I have plenty of other kits to be getting on with so I will do one of those first. Thanks to everyone for your help
You are very welcome. I've painted 3 of the Bountiful Baby dolls (the preemie triplets) and they are a pain because the vinyl is way too pink. I think their newest sculpts have a different color vinyl although I'm not sure.
You could well be right about the vinyl colour although I think it just comes up different in some batches. I had an Avery kit and even though she was pink she wasn't quite so pink as both Embers I've had and she was beautiful to do. she is my very best yet. I can't part with her although that was the original plan. My excuss for keeping her is I use her as my reference/comparison, LOL
Karen - the arms are Tasha Edenholm's Joey arms. Just seemed to fit her better. I also used a 16" body. Otherwise I find that most of the baby heads are too small - out of proportion, so I use smaller bodies & limbs than what comes in the kit.
I don't feel like my photos are good enough to enter the contest, though. I wish they were!
Hi Cheri, I may steal your idea and try different limbs and body. She does seem to have a very small head. The Avery I have is O.K but I think she has a big head anyway (meant in the nicest way possible,LOL Thanks for the tips.
Cheri, I think you should enter them anyway (IMHO). Just cause you don't think they're good enough doesn't mean someone else won't! What have you got to loose eh?
O.K I have a confession to make, I did try to leave Ember alone for a while but she kept on and on calling me, what was I to do, LOL I started her again but after reading some of the replies I had about how you can overwork some dolls and that you can be to crittical of your favourite, I went into it in a different frame of mind. I also realised that I like her lip colour lighter than all the other dolls I have done. with all this in mind I began again and, SHE IS BEAUTIFUL. her skin colouring is much better with lovely little blue undertones. I havn't completely finished painting her yet, I still have finger/toenails to do and creases and eyebrows and all the little fine details that really bring them to life but I am past the stage that I was having all the problems with. I wanted to just say thank you to everyone for their good advice. If I can ever work out how to post a link (I'm not a computer person) I will put on a few pictures when she is all finished. Thanks everyone. Love Karen. X
I know what you mean about the Ember doll. I have finished her, however, she ended up being stripped twice before I did finish her! She ended up looking too purple, to me she looks "dead"! haha I ended up putting red hair on her which I hate now. Everyone else in the family likes her, but I'm not satisfied with the end results. I had SO much problems with her face due to the vinyl being so darn soft and bouncy. Plus, her little face has very deep areas around her eyes, nose and mouth. I was extremely frustrated with trying to get the layers of flesh on her because I ended up with so many sponge marks. I ended up having to cutting down a makeup sponge in a small strip and round off the edges. After I was done, I sort of rubbed softly on the sponge marks to get them off. It ended up pretty good. Your not the only one having problems with the Ember baby!!
Tina -- thanks for the tip about getting in and around those deep places. I'm having that problem right now with a doll. If you ever buy a super-soft sculpt again try stuffing the head with polyfil -- it helps with the rooting and should also help with the painting.
Thanks for the advice on soft dolls. I'm having problems taking photos of my dolls and if anyone can tell me which light is best, sunlight..etc. I've tried laying my dolls on the sofa with the sunlight coming in, but I'm not getting very good photos, even with a high megapixel camera. Any advice would be greatfully appreciated. I wanted to post my ember doll link and my Taffy doll from Secrist. I would appreciate any even if it's negative comments on them. These are my third and fourth dolls that I've made. I'm glad they've turned out as good as they have. Thanks! Tina
Try taking photos outside under a tree on a bright sunny day. You can take various photos with various degrees of light in these conditions. The only thing I can tell you about photographing your dolls is to keep on trying until you find out what looks good.
Thanks for the suggestions. I hope that someone will look at my doll photos and let me know what they think about the dolls themselves. Does anyone think I'm on the right track in painting dolls? I would LOVE some feedback on the painting of them since I'm very new at reborning dolls. I'd really appreciate bad or good advice on them. Thanks!!
