Hi everybody, I was wondering if there is anything that can
be used to reduce shine on a baby after it has been put together? I have used three layers of matte varnish but after dressing my baby she has started to go a bit shiny again! is there a product that doesn't need baking? Please help!cry

The only thing I know of is Porcelain spray for use on porcelain dolls and peices. I don't think it's compatible with Genesis and may not be with the vinyl either.

Other than that you could get a brush-on water-based sealer but then you run the chance of brush strokes and possibly cracking and peeling later on.

Can I ask... why do you have 3 layers of matte? One coat is usually sufficient. You didn't thin it out at all did you? confused

Hi thanks for the reply, I used three layers of matte
because each time I applied a layer it looked fine after
baking but then became shiny again after a couple
of days. I did not thin the matte with thinners but each
layer was applied quite thin because ive heard that
you can be left with scratchy marks if it applies to thick weirdface

Yes, you're right! Thin is best. Glad you didn't thin it cause it really defeats the purpose.

If you have a heat gun you could always use that with more matte. But keep it away from hair as it will singe or destroy your rooting.

oh yes I didn't think of that ! I dont have one but I could get one, are they expensive? and are they easy to use?
This would be great as it's only really the arms and legs that look shiny, but I think that it really spoils all of the hard work that went into her, she has a beautiful face with dolly looking arms and legs!
Do you think that the heat gun would affect the micro glass beads in her limbs?
Thankyou so much for all your help.

Here is the link to the heat gun...  http://www.secristdolls.com/inc/sdetail/5913 It's not all that expensive if you think about saving your baby from going back into the oven! confused OH MY! That sounds bad doesn't it?? eyepopping.gifjawdrop.gif

I use mine for touch-ups and it works great! You only put the heat on your part for not more than 3-5 seconds in each area. And go round and round with it so you're not holding it in one place. Not hard.

Thank you for your advice, I did get a heat gun and managed to sort out most of the shine problem. There are a couple of places where the shine has returned but I think that I may have held the heat gun there for too long! I may try again or just leave her alone now,
Thanks again.

are you using genesis? if so, you don't need to worry - a shiney babe can be corrected very easily and with no real work at all. In your local shopping mart, go to the isle where all the sponges and cleaning products are - your looking for "magic eraser" hard surface cleaner, here in australia these are made by Chux. These are little white sponges that are sold for easy cleaning on pen, markers, crayon etc from painted walls and simala surfaces. For some reason a little water on one of these sponges and a quick wipe over of your doll, the shine will just vanish!

i'm not sure why this works, or how... all i know is that it does!!! This was a tip i received from an experianced reborner when i was first starting out. I'm not sure who discovered this little trick or what even possessed them to try it out, but it works 100% of the time and will not affect the painting you've already done on the doll.

I'm not sure how this would go on acrylic painted babies, and i'd imagine that it would not be such a good idea to try as i imagine it would remove the acrylis based paints from the vinyl... it would probably be ok on oil based paints... i've ever only reborn with Genesis, and these sopnges are safe and effective to use on the genesis heat set paints.

hi i also had the problem with shinny limbs on a doll and i found out that it was most likely caused from putting the glass beads into the body parts with out putting them into a bag or naylon stocking, i to have tried everything to make the shine go away , and it helped when i removed the glass beads, it's not all gone but a lot of it is.good luck.....

Hi Naomi,

Yesterday I was reading some posts and I saw your tip on how to deal with a shiny baby. In the Netherlands they are called "wondersponges".
I had those sponges and I already used them with great effect on my leather chairs. So I took my very shiny - first reborned - 10" Berenger baby and gave it a try.
With a couple if strokes my baby was better than she ever was! It was a lot less work than working the baby over with matt sealer.
Thank you for your great tip!!

Does it last or do you have to do it again?

I was just going to ask that same question, I finished the triplets and need to touch up the lips on one , so I used the hest gun for the first time and she turned out shiney. i thought i,d better do it to the others, except for the shine they look cute. I hope I have time to get some of the magic rubbers. The doll show is only 2 days away and I only have a few finishing touches to do, like eye lashes and one head of hair, Ihave 2 of the triplets in pink chrocet dress, bonnet and undies but the other one has only creamknitted singlet and chrocet bonnet undies & booties. Does the magic rubber work on Colour Box heat set ink. June M from Oz.weirdface

Hi, I was reading your posts on the magic sponges. I think what is causing the shine to go away with these is because they contain a chemical in them. Beware though, I took my Granddaughter to her doctor appointment and had seen a picture on the bulletin board of a little girl with severe chemical burns on her hands and up her arms from these! It was her chore to clear scuff marks off the floor and walls. This Mother was warning people not to let their children play with the pads or use them due to the chemical burns it produced on her daughter. Needless to say, I am making sure my Granddaughters don't get ahold of them! Just thought I'd let you know that they do contain some pretty intense chemicals. It probably burns the shine off!! LOL weirdfaceTina

Hi Tina,

If there are chemical components in the sponges shouldn't it be mentioned on the wrapping?
I can't find anything, just that they are very abbrasive. Like I wrote it did wonders on my leather chairs and they should have been affected by aggresive chemicals.
Meanwhile, the baby I sponged is still sleeping peacefully, but I will keep watching her.

Chemical burns being caused by this product is an urban legend.  Someone typed this up wanting to cause a stir and sent it through emails attached to a picture of a little girl that suffered real chemical burns.  It is completely false and a doctor's office should be more careful about displaying false information like this.  Magic erasers are safe and non-toxic.  I received this email months ago and looked into it.  You can look it up for yourself at snopes.com or the Mayo Clinic by typing in Magic Eraser Chemical Burns.

You can't believe everything you read.  I guess not even in doctor's offices anymore!

Anytime something appears in an email or on the internet and you think it is suspicious you can go to www.snopes.com and often find out if it is true or not.

Here is what I could find related to the magic eraser:

I really don't understand the motivation behind stories like this either.  There seems to be a lot of them though. weirdface

I did try the magic eraser suggestion on my first doll and it does work wonderfully. smile

Have a good evening,
Tesa

Thanks for sharing all this information and to help clear up some of the mis-information!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes to snopes.com to check out all this baloney!!

I think the people that do all this don't have a life and want to make other's lives miserable (IMHO). I always return the favor of these kinds of fwds to everyone that sends them to me, with the correct info or the link to it. That way they know if it's legit or not. Saves me at least getting more of them for a while.

I'll have to start doing that -- looking in Snopes and then sending it back with the real info.

Still asking the question:
What makes the dolls shiny? My first doll came out very matte and so I am asking in case this happens to me in the future. Thanks, G.

Did you look it up in the search?

Too high heat, heat-gun, too long in the oven, oils from hands, thinning out matte glaze, too many layers of matte, rubbing of clothing on parts when changing too much, etc. Lots of stuff. Least we have a way to get rid of it. :)

If you are going to try that, just make sure you do it lightly and in a not so noticable spot in case something happens. But then again, if it did and you are using Genesis, you can always redo that area.

Let us know how you like it. :)
