hi, can i have some help please, i just dont seem to get the colour of my babies lips right, i have the secrist kit and have used the paint labeled lips but it seems to orangy, i have bought more paint colours any advice to mix up the most natural lip clour, thankyou.
I asked my teacher about the pre-mixed paints and she didn't care for them. In her opinion it was easier to use the regular Genesis paint and work with it until you get the color desired.
On one of my dolls I used the red with a little tint of burnt umber. I was trying to get as close to my sons baby picture as I could get. He had such deep pretty colored lips not the pale.
You could also play around with the red and white and paybe just a touch of the burnt umber to get a lighter shade
It really makes a difference if you got your paint from Secrist or one of the other places. BB says they get it from us and they may get the standard colors but they totally mix their own with their own program. So, yes it's totally a different color.
Let me know which premixed you purchased from where and then I can help you more.
hi, i got the paints from doll kits uk, they are secrist paints, the kit had the paints labeled, lips, wrinkles, veins etc, i have looked at other peoples dolls and the lips look so lifelike, nut i just cant get the colour right, i have pyrole red , crimson , and other colours from other places still secrist , but the lips end up like lipstick, thanks.
Do your colors look like this and have these names: http://www.secristdolls.com/inc/sdetail/25936
How many layers did you put on? Did you put it on extremely thin or a little thicker? I only use 2 very thin coats of the lip color and then a thin layer of glazing gel. Mine turn out really nice. I use the filbert (catstongue) brush, the same kind I use for the nails.
hi, thanks for replying , the paints are the same as in the link and do have the same names, i bought extra ones like pyrole red, bismouth yellow, crimson, i do have the correct brushes, just a thought maybe its when i do the face colour , am i not supposed to get any paint at all on the lips befor painting them , i mean i dont purposely do it, but maybe?,
We have found (through trial and error) that it is best not to get any paint on the lips during the regular painting process. If you do just take your filbert brush and some odorless thinner (dab wet brush on towel) and take your paint off of them.
I do a very light base flesh layer on mine and it seems to work for me, but no other colors. I would give that a try. But the premixed lip color is already thinned with medium so all you have to do is apply a very thin layer with your filbert brush and bake. If the color is too light (which is not the case with your baby) then do one more very light layer.
You may want to look at a color wheel and see what color will neutralize the color you have (look directly across from the color) and put a light layer of that color on and see if it lightens them up where you are satisfied with the color. If it doesn't work then don't bake it and remove it with a little thinner.

Hi . I,m just painting my first reborn and yesterday i had the same trouble with the premixed lip color . I decided to go over the top with a little flesh 08 mixed very thinly and i just dabbed on with the filbert brush and then very lightly tapped the excess off with the sponge and the lips have come out great . It has lightened them up perfect . Hope this helps a little as i,m only learning too .
hi sarah, i'm glad its not just me! i will try the flesh o8, i suppose it is a bit trial and error , it's when you look at the other babies with those wonderful natural lips you just think " i want to do that !!!!" good luck with your baby, marejka x
Hello again ladies!! Just a suggestion, but putting a tiny dot of blue into the mix will cure that orange problem. Make sure to use just the littlest amount possible and that will counteract any orange color that the paint or underlying skin color might have. I discovered this trick when reborning some other company's dolls. I think that you will find that this helps.

Your very welcome Marejka . I know it worked for me but like you say it,s trial and error . Good luck with your baby too . Just got the glazing and rooting to do now so almost done . Thank you Pat i didn,t think about adding the blue .. hmm silly me . I thought using the premixed colors would be ideal but the lip and eyebrow color are way off , all the others are fine though . We live and learn and having you lovely ladies to put us newbies right is great and i thank you so much ..
Just wanted to let you all know that Mr. Secrist phoned me yesterday about this post on the lips. He is personally taking a look at the color combination (especially the "orange") to see exactly what the problem is. He'll also look at the pigment amount and the transparency. He will let me know the results.
Also, make sure that you are putting the very thinnest layers of the lip color on, as excess will make your lips darker than you want. Don't load your brush up, start out with a toothpic amount at first and brush it on EXTREMELY thin (a transparent layer), so thin that it looks like there is nothing on the lips, then bake. It should come out so light you can barely see it. Then bake and do another layer if that is too light. It usually takes me 2 layers (baking in between).
And remember, the thinner is already in the lip color. But if you would like to add more to make it even more transparent, put some paint on your palette and 1 drop of odorless thinner, then mix well.
Also, in regard to the premixed eyebrow color, it is just a very basic eyebrow brown, you do need to mix it to your intended color. If we had colors for every eyebrow you'd have to buy a lot of them instead of just one base color that you alter to match.

Hi I am new to this forum my name is Jackie I live in France I am new to reborning I have bought all the things I need I hope I too have the premixed paints do you think I need to buy any other paints too. I have been practicing on my parts first, not so easy as it looks on the DVD I have the art of Newborning and the paint with genises dvd do you think that the newborn beginner is better to start with I am to afraid to start on my doll I have two kits now one is Squeaky and the other is Tommy asleep
Jackie ,.. As a newborn beginner you be just fine with the DVD's ,..i too learnd how to newborn my first doll kit with the DVD,...you be just fine. You dont need to buy any other Genesis paint colors if you have the premixed paints.
Hi Jackie .. As Zweers said you don,t need to buy any more paints . I have done my first reborn with the premixed paints and have only had to mix my own lip color as i didn,t like the premixed one . All the rest are fine . I did buy the beginner dvd and thought it was very helpful and a lovely friend lent me the dvd,s you have so i had a bit of eveything to go at . Hope to see your first attempt very soon .. Don,t be afraid to start . If all goes wrong you can strip back and start again , it won,t harm the doll . Hugs Sarah ..
Thanks I really am buying everything I need my husband said how much more do you need before you start I just say a littel bit more he is into remote boat and planes I think he has that much he could open a shop so he cannot say anything to me LOL
Thanks Sarah could you tell me what I need for my nails as the was no white in my kit. I have rooted a head I got from Secrist I bought three to practices on still need to get the crown right but I enjoyed doing that Jackie
Hi Jackie . On the nail tips i use the flesh 08 , you don,t need to thin this down just use straight from the jar , if you get too much on the brush just slightly wipe it on some paper towel to get the excess off . Bake as usual and then add your glazing gel to shine . Some use the white but not many of us have perfect white nail tips do we lol . Hope this helps .
Hi, everyone. I was wondering, you all mentioned how the pre-mixed lip paint is off. Did this problem get resolved through the strawberry paint set? If I bought the regular pre-mixed paint set, and just ordered the strawberry lip paint, would that work, or is the blush (and crease and wrinkle paint, for that matter) off too? Thank you all so much for the assistance.

Just one more quick thing: Could I just add a touch of the periwinkle blue to the 'off paints' and make them like the strawberry paints? Thanks.

I've discovered the best way to do the lips is one thin coat at a time. The first 2 coats don't look like they have any color but the colors build up. I also paint my lip layers while I'm working on my flesh tones and blushing. Right before the head goes in the oven it gets a super thin layer of paint on the lips. I couldn't believe the difference in the color if I did one thin coat at a time versus doing a single thicker coat! It also gives me more control over what color the lips are going to be.
Clarification, please. Which paint are you using? Is this a mix you make yourself, or the lip paint that comes with the regular premixed paint set? (Or is this just a general rule for lip painting?). Thank you so much for the tip.

It is a general rule for using GHSP, thin layers, I just really noticed it when I was doing lips. I also now use the same techniques on the palms and soles of the feet, too.
