I have started practising reborning techniques on a couple of play dolls. One is a soft bodied doll, which is fine, but no detailing or creases etc so hard to say if it looks okay. Am happy with the limbs on this but the head is a bit yuk! lol I am now practising rooting on this one which is going okay but am having trouble getting the direction of the hair right - oops...that's why I'm practising I guess, lol.
Anyway, other doll I am trying out the paints on is an all vinyl newborn girl dolll - she is quite good in size and proportion etc - I have just finished the flesh layers, veining and creases - I am loving the body and arms/legs, but again the head is weird - a little chalky in places - but seems an all over different tone - I used the same colouring techniques and paint mixes on whole body and head so am wondering if the vinyl used was slightly different for the head than the rest of the doll and that's why I'm finding this!
Is it worth practising on play dolls first or does it give a false impression of what the real kits would be like?
i started on play dolls because i wanted to be sure that reborning was for me before i had gobs of money involved , also i feel you' re a bit freer to try new things with the playdolls as apossed to a 50.00 kit........sage
Welcome to the forum Angela, I also started out practicing on play dolls but the dolls head was too hard to root I kept breaking needles so I used wigs until I bought my first kit which was a micro preemie so the head was small I did ok but I kept getting better with each kit keep praticing untill you are satisfied then move on to a kit the vinyl is very soft much easier to root, good luck!
I started with a practice doll as well, but my needles kept breaking, too. It was a Peterkin boy doll. It's a lot easier with a real kit :) But I do want to reborn some Berenguers I collected over the last few months. They are made of harder vinyl but are beautiful, and could look great once reborned.
Anyway, welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll love it here and learn a lot :)

Oh yeah... you may want to try some of Secrists "test limbs". That way you'll get the real feel of the kits and rooting on them for just a few bucks. I know it's not a full doll but it is inexpensive, especially while your practicing.
