Mohair breaking
Permalink

Hi,
I am rooting my first baby. I am using a 38 crown needle from BB. Most of my mohair is breaking at the insertion point. I am rooting at the cut end and almost all of the ends are not going into the head. Could it be my needles? It almost seems as if the notches are too sharp and keep cutting the hair. My mom and husband tried it with the same results. I am so discouraged. My first painting job turned out nice but my baby has no hair! Has anyone else had this problem or perhaps can give me some ideas on how to fix this? I would really appreciate any help.

There is section on he3re with answers to a lot of questions, under search, you just have to be patient and look through them. There is a lot of good questions and answers on all aspects of reborning. Have you tried a sock filled with rice, heated for 3 min in the microwave WITH a glass of water in ther also, so the rice doesn't burn. Hope this helps. XXXXX June.

Yes, a rice sock (search rice sock or rooting) works nicely. Sometimes the needles do have sharp barbs. Have you tried using a different needle? What type of doll are you working on? Are you using mohair (angora goat) or human hair? What kind of quality is the hair?
Sorry to ask you all these questions but we need a little more information before we can really help more and we'd like to be able to give you the right answers. :D

Please don't give up, sometimes it just takes a little practice. Also if you are stabbing the needle into the head this can cause breakage. I insert the needle slowly and at an angle to the head, almost but not quite parallel to the surface. Rooting near the cut end is good, about an inch in from the end. That way the grain of your hair will all be going in the same direction.
