Help warming/brightening up BB peach vinyl
Permalink

I'm getting myself frustrated over BB's peach vinyl. It has a grayer cast than the LDC kits I've been doing lately, and I can't seem to get the BB peach to warm up to my liking.

My usual base skintone routine goes like this:
flesh 08 + phthalo green
flesh 07 or 08
periwinkle wash
flesh 07 or 08

As suggested in some of the color correction threads, I've tried incorporating raw sienna into my flesh mixtures, as well as using raw sienna washes in between flesh layers. That helps to a certain degree, but there's still a cool/dull undertone I don't care for.

Possible solutions I'm considering:
1. beginning with raw sienna washes
2. beginning with more opaque flesh layers
3. decreasing the proportion of blue in my periwinkle wash
4. quit annoying myself by comparing the BB head to the LDC head after every layer confuse.gif

Any advice?

I know that some people talk about warming up their kits with a yellow ochre wash layer. Have you looked at your color wheel?

I have yellow ochre but I've never used it -- I'm scared of painting on a coat of jaundice.

Try adding just a dot of yellow to your 08 color and only do it in a random layer, not an all over layer. See if that helps. I should add that you will want to do another layer of just flesh tone after the yellow with maybe just a dot of green in it. This really worked for me when doing my BB kit.

If you do more yellow than that the baby will look jaundice, I know it has happened to me before.

Your avatar baby is simply beautiful aww

Thank you! I made her to keep, changed my mind and put her on eBay, and now I'm glad she didn't get any bids. My mother's laid claim to her now.

You know that is the same problem I just had with two BB peach kits. I checked and checked my color wheel and did a green wash with a speck of yellow. No matter what, it still stayed an off color (purple undertone). I then made them both ethnic babies and got them to a good color. It took so many  layers to get it that way. Even still, the palms on one is not a healthy warm pinkish color I like. I too was so frustrated that after I get my Lucy kit (can't find her anywhere else) I think that's it for me from BB's kits. I'm interested to see other suggestions that come up.

It's funny, because I don't recall having this trouble with my Libby kit, yet people who are working on the brand new Donna RuBert quads are expressing frustration with the gray vinyl. Clearly there's a way around it, because the prototype babies all have a nice warm glow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the next batch of new releases from BB will all be brighter.

Hi, I have used the yellow ochre many times and don't be afraid, you wont end up with a jaundice looking baby as long as your colour is thinned right down,  it does warm up the grey.
