Cutting/styling curly mohair??

noSo I have got this wavy shiny mohair and when it is rooted it has turned more frizzy than I thought it would be.  I have mostly only used straight mohair or alpaca hair which has been fairly easy to cut and style.  I need ideas??  I figure that after I am done rooting that I should wet and cut and then maybe a nylon over the head to hold it down?  Thanks

Glue the hair inside first. Then after the glue is dry, carefully wash and condition the hair. That should take away that frizz. Dab the hair dry, don't rub. Then comb and to make it straighter you can use the stocking, yes. Then leave for a few days.

I usually use wavy/curly hair and I love it as it's so versatile. I use a razorcomb on mine, not a sissors so I don't get that blunt end "cut" look. It's not really so important if you use curly hair, I just prefer the razor.
Post some pics in the artist showcase when you're done. We'd love to see your baby. Actually you could post some before and after hair shots :)

Okay- that's a great suggestion! I am nearly done rooting- and I will try my razor comb after I wash and set. Do you generally leave bit longer on the top? Thanks for the help

Yes I usually do. But it can also depend on whether it's a boy or a girl. Boys are usually shorter on the sides and back.

Ladies- If I may...
I am an x-hair designer by trade and if you use really good mohair, do not razor it...cut it withscissors. The reason is that razors do not blunt the ends but give a sightly frayed appearance and with curly hair- frayed- or thinned ends= frizz! curly doesn't look blunt in layers anyway as the hair doesn't lay in a straight line like a straight head of blunt cut hair does, so it will cut down on the frizz. You want to keep the "weight" in the blunt ends versus making them razor thin or it will give a frizzy look and let the ends wrap around each other for knots. Now for straight hair, I say razor as you don't want weighted ends and you want it to be more thin on the ends like a baby with straight fine hair looks. Sorry I disagreed here, but I know everyone likes different things, just quoting my knowledge of hair here. I don't know reborning well, yet, but I know hair very, very, well! Hope this helps. awwbiggrin

Since I'm a newbie, I might have drug up an older post, but wanted to comment on it. Definitely use conditioner and style it wet the way you want it and if you want cute curls, all over, wrap it around your finger, pin it...a pin-curl and let air dry. don't comb out with a comb, run your fingers through so you don't frizz it. Good-luck! Now if I only knew about reborning what I do about hair...disbelief

Thanks very much for the hair lessons ladies. It's much welcomed! We have also had a goat/mohair expert give her knowledge in forum too!

Yes Susan, the same (or baby) conditioner we use on our hair, same shampoo too! I personally use Johnson's Baby Shampoo. And don't rub the hair, just rub the shampoo in your hands, then softly run it through the hair. Use warmish water, not hot

Georgiaga thanks for those tips! They are true as I had done hair for some time. I'm not a licensed hairdresser but I did do cosmo school (for a time) and hair for years and your absolutely right. My son had very full, luscious, curly black locks and I have to trim his hair with conditionder in it. So great tips!

I also like to wet the hair a bit while rooting and brush lightly with a toothbrush so I get a better picture of the hair. I can also see if it is going in the direction I want, and missing spots.

I will have to try cutting the curley hair instead of razor combing it. All in all, mine didn't turn out bad though. No frizz.

I use a comb or Stephanie Sullivan uses a natural bristle brush and she brushes while shes rooting so she can see too. I have to go over those missing spots to Emily. hehehe

Thanks Em and Pat!
I will keep it wet as I root! I am going to start tonight! yawn
I hope I have enough needles to last me the whole process...you think 5 is enough?confuse
I hit a hard portion of vinyl and couldn't get the 40G needle OUT!
I pushed it all up in and felt it through the back of the eye in the head and it wasn't sticking out so it went inside the vinyl in a pocket of some sort...whatever...nothing to get hurt on, now so it's glued in now!
I am not selling this doll as she's a learning doll for me, but she's already better than some clown looking reborns I see on Ebay, so I am happy so far! clap.gif

On the Secrist Course #3 DVD they do a tiny rooting thing, and I mean tiny...anyway she "brushes" the eyelashes with a mop brush as it's softer than a toothbrush and so you could also do that I guess with the head hairs or get a super soft boar bristle brush as that distributes natural oils in the hair and will make it shiny! Synthetic clear bristle soft baby brushes will not distribute oils...no synthetic will.

Stephanie recommends the natural boar bristle brush. I was with her at IDEX 2 years ago and she did a rooting demo for us. That is what she used.

Well, I got and e-mail from Secrist today... they want me to root another head. I'll get it on Thurs. I'll keep you all posted. Right now it's a mystery baby head as they didn't say which one it was. :o
