I really am serious about getting started in this, but with the untold hours I've spent looking at all the sites on the internet, I'm getting very confused.
I've figured out that Secrist is "the" main company/source, with the most training and videos and books, etc. But there is also Dolls by Sandie, which also seems to be a Secrist affiliate?? Right?
Then paint - LDK, Genesis, Gentle Touch?? Now the Secrist site seems to recommend Genesis, but on the Sandie site they go for Gentle Touch as being newer and better. Gentle Touch also is on videos by Pat Secrist? And Video #? (pick one) seems to refer to a specific paint palette, etc., etc. I'm so confused.
All I know for sure is I need to use Angelic Touch mohair, and that I am leaning towards the Gentle Touch paints.
SO WHAT DO I DO??? without wasting tons on money on things I don't need, 'cause money is a real issue with me. Just which video or book or tutorial do I need to get started with a 19" doll. Which paint kit do I buy to start with (mini kit? pre-mixed colors? peaches and cream? strawberries & turnips? marshmallows & chocolate? the "all-the-paint-you'll-ever-use-in-your-whole-life kit? YIKES!! I just want to do a wonderful job, so I'll buy what I have to -- But what do I have to buy??? Things like cosmetic wedges and craft sticks and glass palettes and stuff I already have because I do a lot of other art and crafts, so I don't need those things in a whole kit. HELP!! And now I'm going to stop my obsessive searching and researching on the internet while I trust that some kind soul will take my hand and point me in the right direction. I've just got to get off the computer, on with my life, and cook dinner for my husband!
HELLO and WELCOME!!!.... We were all like that at first or Well I was..... Not know what thing was which and how to use them and where they went.... First thing the training DVD's are really good and they explain how to use each thing.... I suggest that you take a deep breathe and relax....
*** Second the other ladies are wonderful and will be on soon to help out with any information.....*** And if I don't know something I will NOT tell you to make you more confussed!...
As for Mohair it's up to you which kind to use..... I like what I get from Secrist.... but I have tried other places... Some are softer than others....
Paints: I use the Gensis pre-mixed paints as they work well for me... As You will notice some ladies will use other kinds.... that's their preferances....
If you have cosmetic sponges, craft sticks, and glass palet's.... i would just get the things you don't have... Like the paint brushes, paints, the kit you want.... I started out with the 17" Zoe Kit which I believe (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG!) This kit comes with the Zoe Sculpt, blushing, creases and wrinkles, a dvd on how to use the Gensis Paints, cloth body, cable ties, sponges, and the referance book!....
I would not research any more as it will cause you to have a big headache!!! I obsessed until I did my first one... NOW I am addicted to thinking about them all the time..... Hope I sorta helped!... others are better informed and can explain in greater detail... Good LUCK and I hope to see you and your finished reborn on here... You will see me time to time.....

I know how you are feeling, and it isn't fun . The reason why I wanted to start reborning is because I discovered reborn dolls one day and fell completely in love with them and wanted one of my own. I researched my head off just like you, the amount of info out there can be mind boggling.........I hope you find exactly what you are looking for in the price range you want, and can get started and have a wonderful experience and make a beautiful baby in the process And also listen to the ladies on this forum who are very experienced in this art, you'll get great advice and support

knitting, crocheting, and making dolls.....now that's what I call a good time!
I can't give the full name out there, but BB has some wonderful starter kits and their price is really reasonable.
Just breathe. I remember being like this also. Once you do one, you'll find less anxiety over starting. My first was Zoe, then I branched out from there.
All good advice! Sounds like you already have some things. My suggestion would be to go to the beginner page of the website, choose a kit (like beginner or deluxe) and look/read all that comes in the kit. If its something you already have then cross it off the list.
As far as paints, everyones heat set paints (Secrist, BB, DBS, etc) are all Genesis paints, just mixed to each companies specific color combinations and instructions. Like Secrist has Genesis, AR paints, Gentle Touch, etc... those are still Genesis but the AR paints already have the thinner in them so you don't need to put any in them when you use them. You would need the thinner with the original or the premixed. We have posts about each kind in the painting topic. DVD wise... see if you can get the one that comes with the kits or whatever one is similar. I personally think that for newbies, the premixed paints are best, especially if you want to find out if you want to make more babies. You have enough to make a few but not so much that if you don't want to make anymore you can get rid of them without ffeeling like you are throwing away lots of money. I would get the premixed paints that have more than 2-4 colors, that way you can do more than the 3 paint colors allow you to do. I would however recommend a larger jar of flesh 07 and 08 as you go through more of that compared to the other colors.
YOu are on the right track with the AT mohair. It's good stuff and after you get the hang of rooting, go searching for posts on mohair and other places to get it if you want.
Ok, read this over and see what else I need to comment on to help you out :)
My next step is to actually order my supplies. Paint, AT hair, a spare limb or two for practice (although it seems kinda creepy to be practicing on a loose limb, like a baby somewhere lost one!), DVD, a book or two, needles, beads, etc., etc.
UPS has confirmed Raine is on his way. I hope Cindy remembered to pack his body and his one eye!
Sounds like you're all decided then. I always make a list then cross stuff off if I don't need it or have it already. hahaha creepy limbs. What about using a limb to practice rooting hair? Now that's creepy rofl a harry limb. :o
Good about your Raine. I hope your kit comes with everything it's supposed to have. I've heard of RDK being slow but never forgetting to put something in an order. *fingers crossed* Let us know when you get your kit :)
Hi, I am so glad I am not the only one with all these questions! I have ordered the 19'' Squeaky starter kit on Friday. I can't wait for it to arrive. My nerves is up, I watched all the tutorials on this site and on you tube. Some are quite freaky I must say. I am not sure what kind of paint comes with the kit. It only states Authentic premixed petite paint set. I don't know if I must buy some extra.
Then its about the filling of the body. I noticed there are 1lb plastic weighting pellets. Is that all that you stuff the body, or do I need to bay other filling as well. I saw on some sites they sell glass beads, baby fat and all sort of things. Anny help???
Hello and welcome to our family forum. We're glad you're here. I love that Sqeaky kit, it is lovely and one of my favorites. The paints that come with it are heat-set paints by Genesis made for Secrist. We do have a topic thread about the different kinds/types of paints so it might be good to read up on those. Some have thinner already added so you don't need extra and some you still have to add thinner. Personally, I recommend Genesis flesh 07 and 08 if you also want to add a nice base skintone. You don't need to if you're doing one of the 3 step painting but I do always like that add that.
For the filling of the body the poly pellets are for weighting of the limbs, head and also the tummy/tushy of the baby. Its not enough for the 19" babies so you may want to check with a close craft/fabric store to see if they have more. I usually weight my 19" babies to about 5 pounds. I do also believe we have several posts on weighting of the babies if you want to use the search feature at the top of the page. Just put in a word or two and click.
I do not recommend the baby fat as that will cause a reaction with the vinyl that is undesirable. Glass beads usually go in the limbs if you don't want to use the polypellets. You will have to buy polyfil to fill up the rest of the body. Some people put them in by themselves but others put them in little cloth bags or otherwise nylon knee hi stockings and then put in knot in the end so they are secure.
