I thought I would make this a sticky since we still have a few that are asking questions about it. And here is the link to the page as it includes photos: http://www.secristdolls.com/reborn_blog/?y=2009&m=8 Here is what the Secrist Reborners Workshop site says about cleaning oily vinyl:
Note: All vinyl dolls, regardless of the manufacturer, can become shiny or slightly oily over time. While many doll makers and sellers may pretend this problem doesn't exist with their dolls (which it does - it is a part of the chemistry in vinyl production) we are willing to not just acknowledge it, but offer a solution! If you follow our directions below for a painted or unpainted Secrist doll kits you can effectively protect your dolls from this problem.
This tutorial is for Secrist doll kits or doll kits using Authentic Reborn paints - using this tutorial for doll kits from other manufacturers may yield different or negative results. Always ask the manufacturer of your doll kit before proceeding.
How to Clean Oily Vinyl For years now people have been running into oily vinyl doll parts. Some say it's caused by baby fat pellets, while others say it is caused by the kinds of coating and paints reborners try to use. Regardless of the cause, everyone would like to know how to get rid of it. Here is a process that worked for me.
Odorless thinner won't do the job, however, 100% denatured alcohol will. Be sure to get a good brand so you don't get discoloration on your vinyl, due to impurities in the denatured alcohol.
You will need lint free paper towels so your baby doesn't end up coated in paper towel fuzz. You will also want a cosmetic sponge, craft stick and superior shine remover. You are probably saying to yourself, "Why superior Shine Remover when I don't have a shine problem?" Superior Shine Remover is the most durable, long lasting sealer on the reborning market today. It won't rub off like so many other sealers. You want to be confident, once you seal your vinyl that it will never come off.

I thought you had made it sticky, too. Thanks for handling!

Linda, I thought I had too but apparently I/we had just done a link to the page. So here it is!
June, Ya, it's supposed to work according to Secrist. Give it a go and see. I need to do this on some of mine too. Not babies I have put together, but like you, some that are already painted. The denatured alcohol isn't supposed to harm the paint like other chemicals will. I have some heads that need it so we'll see.
And I'm going to explore further by sending Secrist customer service person your other post about your babies and have them explain to me in case there are more questions.
On the Secrist/AV vinyl, the Genesis paints are supposed to be self-sealing so as not to come off. But I'm not sure if that means it seals oils from coming out if it's from release agent stuff. Maybe I'll have to check with my contact at Genesis and see what she says. Could be there's additional solution, lets hope!

Hi, thanks for the usefull info, i purchased teddy from secrist and used heat set genesis paints, he's been in the box ready to sell for the past 3 months, when i opened the box he was drippping in oil. I was so distraught over this as i'd spent 2 months working on him to make him so lovelly. Will try the denatured alcohol and other stuff. Big thanks x
Yes, it is the AR Superior shine remover. Don't worry about the inside of the limbs. It feels really smooth because the outside of the kits is micro-textured to make the paints stick better. Usually the inside of the vinyl is not the problem. Also, that issue was fixed some time ago. The newer vinyl has a guarantee if you look on the website. :D
I have a friend who is using air dry paints and this has recently just happened to her Zoe. I told her about the instructions that you have posted to take care of this problem, but now we are both wondering if the denatured alcohol will remove the paints on her air dry painted baby. (Also she hasn't painted brows yet, and will she be able to add them after applying the shine remover?
Since she is using ADP's she probably won't be able to successfully use the shine remover as it is a "bake" item not air dry and you can't combine the 2 methods. Any baking will probably remove the air dry she already applied. Also, for the oily vinyl (which is the old vinyl, not new) the alcohol is to be done on bare vinyl and the the shime remover, then after all that is done, you would apply the air dry paints since they can't go in the oven. I hope this helps. If not, come back and ask more questions or use our "search" feature at the top of the page in the red bar.
I tried all that stuff but the oil still leaks through, Secrist will replace the kit if you put X on all parts take a photo and send it to them. They have got rid of the kit maker, and the reason the babies are oily is................ that they where using too much release agent, so I don't think what you do with the kits will fix the problem. You will just have to keep doing it. Best to have it replaced now and stop all the problems, heartache and hard work for it to keep happening I had about Nine, they all all replaced, that is why I haven't been on here much as I haven't got into redoing them yet. XXXXX June.

Sad to hear that are still having issues with that. If you put the AR shine remover on first before using the ADP's and bake, then it should be able to have them done on the outside. It's just that you can't use them "over" the ADP's.
Thank you, June, Dee and Pat. Don't think my friend is going to be very pleased when I pass on this info to her, but at least she'll know now. Oh my, June, nine kits? You must have been so frustrated!! I'm glad Secrist replaced your kits though.
Ya, me too hun. Its weird that all of a sudden... IDK. I have one I did 7 years ago and she's just like the day I finished her. "Curiouser and curiouser..." said Alice. lol
