Can anyone suggest a book or other tutorial for painting techniques especially for the all over coloring for the face. I am having a hard time finding the right technique to get the tone throughout for the flesh. (color wise). I have used the thread technique for the facial marks but cannot discover what colors to use to get a full even flesh tone.
I do have the facial features book but I may need to get a painting tutorial for the best guide to coloring.
I'm not sure what you mean by "all over coloring" do you mean your base flesh layer the flesh 08 or the layering of flesh colors flesh 08, 07 ect? I have seen books on techniques for facial features, trying to remeber where, did you try Secrist or Ebay? I know I've seen them on a reborn website as well just can't remember where. Give them a try though.
I think we may need more information. What kind of paint do you use (air dry or heat set)? If you are using heat paints like Genesis or Authentic Reborn, think about the materials for sale on the Secrist website. If you are considering the Course 1 - 3 DVDs, the Course 3 is the one that you want because it includes the most information.
If you are using the air dry paints, you will want to search the web for classes, tutorials, books that will work well for both types of paint or that will focus on the air dry paint.
At the risk of sounding stupid ... what is the thread technique?

Hi, I was busy finishing my doll so I am just reading your input.
I guess I need to look at a tutorial for flesh color layering.
Maybe the Course 3 DVD like Play Days suggested would be a good consideration.
The thread technique I read about was in the facial features book I bought on the Secrist website.
It makes facial marks.
My doll came out too pale but I realized when I see her at night in dim lighting she looks fine.
When I see her during the day hours and daylight she is too pale.
Any suggestions for natural coloring? Do you have to use all the flesh colors as layers because I have not read this or seen this on the 19" doll DVD.
My dolls legs came out the best I did the least coloring layering on them. the arms look fine too but I seem to be struggling with getting natural skin tones.
Thanks for any additional input.
I will post my dolls pictures tomorrow so you can see what I mean about the pale coloring. ( I did all the facial painting at night after work)
There really isn't one right or wrong way of building the skin. How light or dark you want your doll to look is also your choice.
I know exactly what you mean about the coloring looking so different in daylight as opposed to night timeI sometimes work at night with an OTT light. I don't set the color by baking it if I can avoid it. I don't like to make the color permanent until I've seen how the painting looks in natural daylight.

In Secrists 2008 Tuturial it covers a lot of techniques, milk spots rashes, c on the sole of the feet instead of an all over colour I bought the Dvd on Painting with GHSP, it was a great help, look on ebay as you may get one someone has finished with. Also the one on The Art of Rooting. I haven't had the opertunity of getting the new Tutorial yet so I don't know if there is any more info in it. Check in the Painting techniques section on the forum. XXXXX June.

The main thing to getting a good complexion on your babies is to start with a great base skintone. On Secrist/AV kits, do your internal wash (other makers kits do not need this) and then start the skintone layer. If you don't get a good base layer the rest will not be as good. (I can't believe I'm posting this again)... Take your flesh color (I used to use 07 but that gave me pale Norweigan babies lol, so now I use 08 as my base).
You want all over color but you want it to look like little teensy-weensy pigment dots, not a flat all over completely covered skintone. Look at yours or a baby's skin, we're actually dots of pigment. You want to blend them with a sponge but not solid. Remember... little dots. Use thin layers always or you'll get chalkies! Then just build from there.
For lighting... try to use either natural daylight or an Ott brand light or some bulb that says natural daylight or your babies will look different in the light than the household lighting, especially if you do them at night.
dear 2beemomee,your cosmetic sponge is your best friend.......ok sometimes a sea sponge can be too lol .when you pounce the paint on -it leaves a lovely - pore - look. get secrists dvd- special reborn technique encyclopedia part 1. great mottleing with berry makers and shows this pounce method. also ton of other great stuff yours sage

I do have 2 copies of the first dvd for sale... "The Art of Newborning" where you learn all the basics. There is also "Painting with Genesis heat-set paints". These are both very good for learning the techniques to get good skintones. The encyclopedia Sagebrush is talking about it also good but has a more advanced format. Either one is good.
There are also books on the methods on the site www.secristdolls.com
