Sealing Mohair
Permalink

Ok I now there is something on here somewhere about sealing your baby's mohair but darn if I can find it. Anyway, I've always used E-6000, however I also tried the tacky glue a few times  and found that it tends to puddle in the bottom of the head disbelief.  So I redid them with E-6000.  How do you ladies deal with this issue if you use tacky glue?  How long does it take for it to dry?  confuse

I have gone to using The Ultimate Craft Glue, It is a clear glue you can get from the cheap shops over in Oz. It is something like E6000, but only costs about$4.49 Aust. for 250 ml.70% V/V Acetone 10%HydrocarbonsLiquid. It is suitable for wood, leather, cloth, cork, paper, woven fabrics, lace and fibrous materials. I use it a lot as it is cklear , drys quick and just about holds things on forever and is good in water. This is who makes it and their Ph No, just in case Secrrits want to get some in for their supplies............................DANDYCRAFT PTY LTD

I use Gem Tac and I love it.  The E 6000 is at Walmart for less than 5.00 for the big tube, but I don't use it as it seems to take forever to dry.  Anyway I found that most of the time I was using way too much glue.  I puddle it in the head...then take the hemastat and get a piece of foam and then stick it in and spread it all around paying attention to the eyes or rooted eyelashes.  I drop in a magnet for the hair and put a little magnet on the outside and move it around until I get where I want the bow to be.   Then I just put it upside down for 24 hours just to make sure...sometimes it's  about l5+ hours and I feel all around and you can tell as it's dry and you can feel the glue on it.  Then after that's dry...I have found a trick with the pacifier.  First make sure you get as much stuffing in the head so you don't lose the paci mangnet to the top of the head as it will jump around lol.  Has that happened to you before?  Anyway I cut a 3/4 X1.5 inch of floam...you know that thick stuff kids play with?  I found some
"no mess adheasive by Loctite" It is a no mess cleanup and pretty safe.  Seems to have about a 30 second span to harden.  Okay...first I  put a dab on the floam and let that get really stuck...about 2 minutes just to make sure.  Then I put the Loctite on the side of magnet that is bare....Before doing all this find a good paci you like and find out what side you want your paci to hold to.  Mark with magic marker (I do that because I can't remember over 2 minutes..lol... then put the magnet using the floam as a handle and put the paci on the mouth where you want it..using tape if you have to, and pop....it sticks right where you want..if it's off a bit..you have a minute or so to get it where you want it.  And I just leave the floam attached and  everything is done.
Oh...if you ever forget to put the magnet in the head  and you have already put the paci one on the doll, I found something that helps...or else you will have a bunch of magnets holding the pace on...lololol...hey....I usually are not laughing by this time...I take a paper plate and make a funnel out of it....then I put the biggest magnet on the outside of the head (on top where you want the bow)....put the locktite paste (it's white and is like toothpaste which it washes off you with soap and water if you hurry.....anyway...drop the magnet down through the funnel and let it attach good.
Soooooo, that's what I have to do once in awhile.

E-6000 is ok but like you said... it takes forever to dry and then I can still smell it for a looooong time. Not good for a baby to smell like that lol
The tacky glue does run if you use too much. I put some on the bristles of a fan brush (I have one just for glueing) and brush it around. Don't press too hard or the glue will come up through the hair holes. You don't really need a lot to hold the hair, most people use way too much. Just a semi-thick coating. You can also put a fan blowing into the head to help the tacky glue dry faster. Once it forms a skin you should be alright, about an hour or two. But don't put the head on or fill with anything for about 2-3 hours or it will stay damp and could mold inside the head.

I have found a jar of gesso for paintings works for me. It dries clear, smells ok, and remains flexible inside the head. Only takes about 5-8 hours or less to dry. You can get it at most artist supply stores. I think it's also non-toxic but don't quote me. It comes in a white large jar with black letters.

Good tips about the magnets Aviva ;)

Thanks for all the great ideas ladies! I used the e-6000 for so long but now I'm trying to find a similar way (with the same quick dry time and overall lasting results) to avoid all those wasted brushes and awlful smell!

I use "Golden" brand acrylic gel medium to seal babies hair. http://www.artsupply.com/golden/gelmediums.htm

They are acrylic, stay fairly flexible, dries clear to translucent, and washes right out of my fan brush with no problem. I have been using this for over 1 1/2 years with no problems. And it's polymer based which is what the heat-set paints are so no issues with compatability!

You should be able to pick up this stuff at any Michaels or art/craft store that carries art supplies and acrylic paints. :)

Oh yeah, it also dries fairly quickly and doesn't smell bad (like E6000) :o

Oh..I know.  The winters here are very mild.
I was wondering if that stuff called mod podge would work like Gesso since we used it to decoupage different things to make them appear 3-D in the 70's when that was the big thing to do at the time...before the macrame in the 8o's lol.   Isn't that funny that there is something really big to do each decade and probably now there are more and more different things.   This is the first time that I have been even felt like doing anything.  I was just too tired and ill to do anything.  It was mom trying to get me interested and I just couldn't do it..now it's the other way around.  But I'm just thankful that I have this to do.  I do notice that  after awhile I get until I don't like the dolsl that much anymore or I see things I should have done better etc.  so then I refuse to put them out there to sell.  I have so many babies that just don't pass the grade and some of the ones that I love, I find stuff wrong.  I have also noticed that when it even comes to picking out a wardrobe to go with the doll it's like I want to hang on to certain items that I got just for them.  Like the Baby Biscotti...that is going to be a real hard thing for me to do.  I even got another one like I had on the blonde Meg. ....Then is getting bad.

Okay... I feel stupid.  For the life of me I can't figure out what "OZ" stands for.  Can someone PM me if it's a competitor's name that we can't say here?
