My name is Bryndís and I'm new in this hobby. I have dreamd for making a reborn baby for many years but I haven't yet. Now I'm choosing a kit to order and looking at every tutorials I can get online. I know I can do this ;) Maby not perfect at first but that is ok, I will learn :) I just love to see your babies, they are so perfect and real!
If you follow your dream to make a lifelike baby, you will definitely be successful because the desire to learn the art is strong.
You are lucky because there is information online now that wasn't available even a few years ago. The disadvantage is that it sometimes becomes difficult to choose kits and supplies because there are so many choices. Everyone wants to make sure they choose wisely because reborning can be an expensive hobby.
I learned that Secrist excels in introducing the art to beginners, providing an excellent foundation for future growth in skills. If you ever have any questions about the products, please let us know.
Again, welcome, Bryndis. I'm so glad you joined us.

I noticed that there are so much informations and tutorials on the internet now and it just makes me crasy to start right now ;) I will probably wait until after christmas though to order my first kit. I´m going to use my time to learn and see how you masters do it ;)
I have been browsing the Secrist web and there is lot of stuff to order and learn from...I will definatly use that ;) I also noticed that I can translate to my language (Icelandic) and that is a bit funny hehe :)
Welcome Bryndis, learn all you can before starting , you will be hooked so get ready, I love reborning it relaxes me and I can't wait to see the finished product, I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do here in the forum.
I am ready to be hooked, I first saw those beautiful lifelike dolls for about 10 years ago on the internet. I am so happy that it is so easy now to order and get information today ;) The worst thing is that I live far away and it takes time to ship to the northpole here hehe ;)
Welcome Bryndis to our lovely forum. :) We're glad you came in to see us and ask questions about newborning/reborning.
Wow, you're at the North Pole?! Well maybe you can get Santa to drop ship your order from the sleigh hehehe. Just kidding. I know that we have many forumers that live very far away from someone they can order doll kits and supplies from, so it makes it a little more difficult to wait for the package. I know that you will just love reborning with us. Make sure you get a dvd on reborning (or a book) to go with your doll kit as it makes it just that much easier when you have it right there. Working off the internet can be frustrating and over-whelming when you are trying to work with the doll kits, paints, hair, etc so I prefer to get everything from one place and use their method.
Once you try a method and learn the basics (like pouncing, painting, etc) you can branch out from there. As Linda said, Secrist is a great place to start for beginners (and experts alike) because they have most everything right in one spot. Plus we have this really nice forum lol. :)
Well I am not far away from the north pole heheh....I live in Iceland and here we have 13 santa Clauses ....very funny guys ;) The first one arrives 13 days before christmas ( 24. dec) and they come one by one every day and put little gifts to the childrens shoe. The children put theire shoos to the window ;) I will definatly ask one of them to bring me some kit ;)
I decided to make an old blog that I havent used for a long time and make it a reborn blog....take a look ;)

Sorry for my english....Im not used to write in english ;)
Okay, very newbie here, still researching, but thinking about trying the mini or the #2 kit. My question is that I heard the Genesis paints are heat set, and will not wear off, I am thinking of doing a doll for my 7 year old little girl, is this something she could play with, and change clothes or would it be just for decoration?
Hello Most reborns are made as collectible however not all of them. I gave a reborn to my 8 year old niece last Christams and she loved it. She still plays with it, dresses it ect, still takes really good care of it not making it an everyday doll but it still gets lots of love and attention. Anyway GHS paints are baked in and last forever as lond as they aren't abused, I don't see why you can't give one to your daughter.
Ideas to make the doll less destructible for a child ...
Hair:
One of the drawbacks to giving a reborn to a child is the chance that the rooted hair could come out even though it is glued from the inside. I
Have you seen any reborn dolls with painted hair lately? When done well, it can actually look as good or sometimes even more natural than rooted hair. The good thing is that painted hair seems indestructible.
If the doll should ever come apart and there are very young children around, another idea is to omit the extra weight inside the doll. Or, if you do weight the doll, maybe try using something that would be less likely to be swallowed for weighting rather than tiny pellets or glass beads. (Note: I edited out extra large marbles as it was pointed out that they may be easier to swallow.) I made an unweighted 19" doll with painted hair so I wouldn't have to worry when my 2-1/2 year.-old granddaughter wants a doll to play with. She loves holding her and handles the doll as if it was a real baby (maybe because the doll looks so lifelike?).

As my first reborn,I bought a Beranguar Play Doll, stripped it off and painted it and rooted it. I did two, I sold the little boy and the girl I made my three yr old granddaughter got her, she picked her and loves her. So for a child and a first kit I would try that. If you do make sure you buy one that cable ties together. As for the weighting, I would still do it the way it is recommended, as I would be worried about marbels being a choaking hassard. Most of my other kits are Secrits and as Pat said learn as much as you can by using Secrists Tuturial, DVD for Painting with GHSPaints and a DVD on Rooting, it does make the art so much more simpler., By the way A very warm welcome to Brindis all the way from Iceland, and also to Skipper68. I'm on the other end of the map. I live in Australia. (Queensland) Reborning is very addictive, so start saving all your pennies, or coins. XXXX June.
I had a very lovely grandmother adopt one of my 17" preemies (Zoe) for her 9 year old granddaughter. That little girl took great care of her new little baby. 2 years later little Zoey still looks good and has more clothes that I do lol.
It depends on the child... I gave 1 each to 2 of my friends daughters and would never, ever give them any again. One of the babies got buried in her grandma's back yard!!! Poor thing! You'll have to be the judge. But if they are under 4 years old I usually do not weight them as they usually carry them by the arm and then the armpit gets ripped out OUCH! :O
I just sold one of my reborns to a grandmother for her 8 yr.-old granddaughter. I reviewed the care sheet with her. She is confident the little girl will take excellent care of the doll, but is concerned about how to make sure her 2 little brothers will not play with the doll. This is what prompted me to think of possible alternatives for weighting the dolls.

I had to repair a body on a baby cause someones little brother wanted it and the little girl didn't want him to hold it so they had a tug-o-war!!! The baby lost and the arm came off and broke the joint off! Those pesky little brothers.....
Oh boy... literally! I hope that doesn't happen, but it wouldn't surprise me. Glass beads and plastic pellets are the last thing their mother needs her toddler and 4-year-old boys to play with.
