internal wash for dark translucent vinyl
Permalink

I'd like to know if there is a particular internal wash I should use on my dark vinyl to make my ethnic baby? When I held it up to the light after applying the paint, I could see the outer paint through the vinyl. Is this normal or is there an internal wash I should use. I've been having a hard time trying to paint my first ethnic baby. Any advice would be helpful.confuse

Hello Monica,
I am working on a AA baby I had to strip it once because I kept adding color and it got to dark ,so now I have the color that I want I am not going to use a wash because the air dry paints I am using said don't use  their paint as a wash, it said to use purple felt, I did a small doll like that   but I'm not sure if I will do it on my more expensive doll, I may not use anything inside, the baby is a medium brown, I  think it will be ok, this is just my opinion,  I am An AA and I think AA dolls are much harder to paint, I won't be doing to many of them LOL. Maybe some of the other ladies will reply to give you their opinion, good luck. Have A Blessed Evening.

Thanks Dee!  I'm an AA also and hate that I'm having so much trouble with my AA baby.  I have a book by Michelle Barrow-Belisle who is an expert in AA dolls, but it involves dyeing.  I thought I could save steps by buying the dark translucent vinyl, but maybe it's better to just dye instead.  I see know why they're are very few who create AA babies.  I'm not going to give up though.  If there's a will, there's got to be a way.  Thanks again.aww

If your vinyl is anything other than a Secrist kit I would definately say no internal wash. They are not made translucent like the Secrist kits so they wouldn't have the same effect.

If you are doing a Secrist kit and using their new dark translucent, then it is optional on the darker blanks. Secrist made the dark translucent vinyl to help save a few steps when doing an AA (just like you said) and it does work. I do the bi-racial babies myself as my neices and nephews are bi-racial and it's easier for me to look at their baby pics to get ideas and coloring right.

YOu are also right in not using the air-dry paints for the internal was as since they are not heat-set the paint can migrate into the vinyl which will cause brusing. Be aware that if you do the dye method of coloring your babies, it can eventually migrate into the vinyl causing bruising. For myself, I have found out that if my parts even so much as touch the container I dyed the vinyl in, wherever it touched is where my bruising showed the worst. Also, you have to be careful in dying the parts... just because you dye with a particular color (say brown) doesn't mean that's the color you will end up with as colors are made up of other color combinations and you might have a tinge of color you don't want. I tried the brown and got a purple-ish tinge of color on my parts! :o

So it's all in experimentation I guess. If you are working on Secrist or AV vinyl, try getting some test parts (they're only a few bucks) and use them to see how it will turn out first. That way you know and don't end up ruining a doll kit!!! :)
