oxidized rooting needles

I spent so much time watching every reborning video I could see online before starting my first reborn.  It was like being pregnant and waiting for the birth..lol...I didn't want to start working on him until I had a good grasp of the techniques so he just sat there in "embryonic" state until I felt ready.  So the painting was beautiful (I think) and I was ready to start rooting....at the swirl of course.  So, I had a new rooting needle (all I had was new ones) and started punching the mohair in and noticed that there were black looking follicles around my golden brown mohair roots.  I kept going, not having heard from ANY of the tutorials that this was part of it, and after about 15 to 20 roots, it got lighter and lighter until I realized it was the danged needle.  Now I've learned to run them through cosmetic sponges until the holes quit being black, but my first baby is finished now and unsaleable because I cannot get that black off.  It is actually IN the holes, not on the surface.  As soon as I had realized what was happening, I had taken the head to the kitchen sink and used a toothbrush and dish washing liquid to try to clean it.  It didn't make a difference,'cause like I said, it's IN the vinyl.   When I show this doll, people ooh and ahh and you know how everyone does these babies.  They look at every square inch because they are so amazed.  Well, of course, it doesn't take long and there it is!!!!   The question, "what is that black stuff?"
Please, please, please somebody tell me there is something that can be done.  He's beautiful otherwise.  I wish I could attach a picture of his scalp right there so you could see what I'm talking about.  Surely I'm not the only one who has run into this problem, but nobody doing tutorials or videos has mentioned it, so I went in blindly and deformed a perfectly good little "baby" boy.
Thanks to anyone who has any remedies or even suggestions.  I'm willing to try almost anything.

You are right! You're not the only one this has happened to and we have a few posts in the rooting threads about it. So if you take a few minutes (well it might take a little longer lol) and go through the topic threads I know you'll find what you're looking for. I do believe someone also posted a remedy :o

It might also be posted in misc chatter, I'm not sure at this point. I do know that we DO have postings on it.

I wipe all my needles off when they arrive with just plain alcohol and that has worked for me.

I give them a good wipe to make sure I get it all.
