Is it legit to change doll's age/b-day???

Hi everybody!!  I'm a realist. I have practiced on several dolls and have yet to put  my 1st reborn doll up for sale.  I'm planning to try and sell one online, perhaps by putting it in my ebay store.  But I know not every doll I advertize for sale is going to sell right away.  For instance,  it could take 3 months, 6 months or even a year or two for it to sell.  I will start by selling the doll with a birth certificate and listing the actual date it was finished as the date of birth.  But if it doesn't sell right away how can I pass it off as a 9 month  old or even a year old when it obviously looks like a newborn or a preemie?  Plus won't people wonder why it was created so long ago and hasn't sold yet?  Or is it legitimite to change the date of birth each time I post it for sale so that it always appears newly born and created.  I want some imput as to what others have done in this situation.  Thanx--Jaden

I always kept my dates. To me it was the date I newborned them that was important not when they sold.

Mine are signed and dated so I don't have a choice on what I put for a date. But I don't think people really look at it like that, I mean that now this "baby" is 6 mos or 9 mos. KNIM? They do look at the dates but I'm not sure if it means anything to them. If I ever have anyone question my dates, I just tell them the baby wasn't ready to leave the nursery yet. :)

Thanks Pat!!!  So do you mean you sign and date the dolls themselves, like where?  On their soft bodies somewhere?  Do you also send them with a birth certificate like I've seen artists do on ebay listing their name, weight , length, and Birthday?  I'm trying to get a feel for what's the norm among artists that sell babies so that my future customers aren't disappointed by my omission of any info about the baby they bought.  Thanks again---Jaden

I use a label with my nursery name, sculpt name and date of rebirth which I pin to the baby's bum instead of marking the doll itself. And on the Rebirth Certificate I also use the date that I finished the reborning.

However, in my auction, I will state that the baby has been cared for in my nursery since her rebirth. If it is recent, I add the date; if not, I leave it at that. The bidder can always contact me for information if it becomes an issue.

I don't think it's written in stone, but more of a personal preference kind of thing. I like Buffington's statement that the baby wasn't ready to leave the nursery yet.

Just my two cents worth.

Thanks Thirteen, I really do appreciate your two cents.  In today's economy even a couple of cents takes on a greater value!!!!  I'm the first to admit I'm not above bending down to pick up a penny when I find one in the parking lot or sidewalk!!biggrin Hee hee!  Hey the more info the better---bring it on!!  Thanx--Jaden

I sign them with a permanent marker so that people cant buy them cheap and resell them as their own work. I also write in biro on the head arround the rim of the neck so it cant be seen . XXXXX June.

I have always signed my babies on the back of the neck below the nape of the neck, close to the base. I sign in permanent pigmented ink so that it's doesn't migrate over time. The reason I sign the neck (and it's all personal preferrence) and not the body is because for some time, a while back, there were unscrupulous purchasers who would purchase a doll from someone, take the signed body and put their own vinyl parts on it and sell it as though the original artist had made it, thereby getting a sometimes premium price for it.

Not that my babies are any great fabulous thing, but I wanted to make so that people KNOW that it's actually me that made my babies. To me, the head is the heart and soul of the doll, anyone can get other limbs but the head really is where all the talent is (IMHO) and where the makers artistry shows the most.
Yes, I do include a custom made "adoption" certificate with all the information on the doll. I do give the finish date of the doll and if the adoptive parent asks why such a difference between the finish date and the birth date, like I said, I just say they weren't ready to leave the nursery yet. Lots of babies don't get adopted right away after birth and their birthdate will be different than the adoption date. :)
Hope this helps. It's just my personal way of doing it.

I actually do not sign my babies anywhere. On the birth Certificates that go home with them I place whatever date the new Mommy wants. Especially if it is a custom or a portrait baby. The new Mommy's sometimes want the birth certificate to reflect their childs actual birthday and weight and length. I have no problems doing that. On the COA that I also provide with all of my babies I put the actual date that the baby was reborned.
